1st gen VW GTI:
What’s your opinion?
Wheeler Dealers converted square to round. Side marker gone and some welding needed to close hole.
Buy a nice '83 and convert.
Round looks better but square looks 'more 80's'

Right round, baby. Right round. Like a record...
Well done that man.
I have an 84 with square. I also have all the parts to convert it to round.
I’m gonna sell it. The question is whether it is worth it to convert.

Is it a GTI or just a rabbit?
If GTI leave it as is. Values are climbing on those. Originality will be a big draw within a decade.
When I was in college, I flipped something like 30 Rabbits. My local independent VW repair shop would send me cars customers were walking away from. I'd buy them for $50-200, replace the clutch or put a used cylinder head or whatever else was needed, then sell them for $1000. Only a couple of times could I afford a square one as they were the ones to have back then. And I could never afford a GTI--they were close to $2000 usually.
So I vote square.
For resale, leave it as is and sell the parts to convert separately.
For personal use, round but the dual big/little rounds like so:
I like them both.
I think the round lights are a bigger deal to the VW insider, but square lights would appeal more to the 50 year old guy who suddenly saw an ad for the GTI he wanted back in 1984 and decided that he needed to buy it immediately.
If it's a GTI, I'd leave it as is, and sell the conversion stuff to an enthusiast. That's assuming that you want to cash out with as much money as possible.
If it's just a Rabbit, I don't think it matters.
It’s a GTI.
I am definitely not keeping it for a decade to make a few bucks. It will be on this forum soon.
I’ll post here what I sent to Paul_VR6:
1984 GTI. Former Challenge car. 2.0 ABA with 16V heads. Very quick.
Body good (not excellent). Paint not so great- lots of fade. Interior a bit rough- no back seat or carpet. Windshield cracked. (Gonna replace). Old tires.
Huge stash of spares. Not sure what- I’ll have to inventory (and much is still buried). I think I have 2 spare trans, 1 spare engine, some misc speed parts (like a G grind cam), and about 3 shelving units full of parts.
Also have conversion fenders and grill to round headlights.
Also have complete Berg Cup style spoiler and fender flares (not on car).
I’d take $2500 as-is for the whole pile for a quick sale.
Note: I know what comes next. Lots of people ask for pics, and a complete list of the parts. I can’t do that now. I will soon (maybe a month or 2), but the price will probably go up. If you are really serious, PM me. I’ll give you the info you need.
