Does anyone know when the replacement for the Star Spec is going to reach the US and if is going to be available in 185/60-14?

I don't know about the size, but the expected ship date is maybe Feb-March 2013. There is a thread on it featuring Rudy from Tire Rack on the Wheels & Tires board at www.miata.net .

Tentative ETA is January. I believe it will have a 185/60-14 size.

I am trying to decide if I want to grab the old Star Specs or get the new tires when they come out...

New ones are supposed to be 1.7% faster and cost pretty much the same (whatever that ends up meaning) The old ones are already starting to go on sale on tirerack. I want to wait for the new ones, but if the old ones get cheap enough, I'm biting.

I was on the phone with Tire Rack the other day, they said shipping in Spring.

My dad flat-spotted two of mine at Homestead a weekend ago, and I needed two replacements in 205-15. They were out of stock in that size, but the last delivery was just on the way. I suspect there will be a couple months of non-availability in the popular sizes.

Also the price on them has crept up, I think I paid $99 for my first set, then 115, and lately 140. No idea where the new one will come in.

Some good info in that thread on Miata.net, thanks. From that, posted by Rudy, preliminary pricing in Miata sizes:

195/50R15 $123
205/50R15 $113
215/40R17 $167
235/40R17 $192
255/40R17 $182

What sizes do you need? That list I posted was the Miata-friendly list, because it came from a Miata forum. Here's the full list from the Japanese release of the tire.

This is probably close to the truth...

Lessee... i have two cars that take 245/45-16s, one that takes 225/45-15s on the street (i can use the 205/50-15 Star Specs in a pinch, that's what's on it right now), and i keep waiting for a Miata-friendly 16" tire.

205/45-16 is Miata-friendly. Heck, it's the stock 16" tire size.

That would be nice... so would 245/40-16.

We put some 245/45-16 on our MSM for a while. Looked pretty badass.

Rats, was hoping to get a set for my '94 Vette - unfortunately, the rears are 285/40-17, so no good. Bummer.

I really wonder how much more sticky the new ones are going to be? The Old ones are already too sticky for the street for me

Too sticky? I think not

Then again, if money weren't an issue, I'd drive around on hoosiers....

That DOES look pretty badass.

I remember you telling me that took some trimming, though... Just how bad was it?

Although that would give me a THIRD car that takes that obnoxiously expensive size.

I think I may just cheap out and get the DZ101s

I autoX 5 times a year MAYBE but I drive it to work almost every day...

its literally half the price for a 205/50/15

its hard to justify the 140 dollars a tire for something that is 15" wheel w/ 100hp and no modifications.

Also looking at the new tread design, it looks like its not as friendly on a wet day...

245/40/17 and 255/40/17! I can fit em on the ms3!
