I'm trying to test start my wrecked neon SRT-4 before I pull the engine for my locost project, but am having an issues getting it to crank. When I turn the key to the "run" position the fuel pump relay makes a loud buzzing sound until the fuel pump has built up pressure and stops running. Then when I turn the key to "start" the engine only will crank a fraction of a revolution before the starter cuts out. I also tried leaving the car in "run" and jumping the starter solenoid which gets the car to crank normally and prompts more buzzing from the fuel pump relay.

I can smell a bit of fuel on the plugs when I pull them, but since it's not firing I'm thinking I don't have spark.

Edit: I also swapped the relay with another identical one from the fuse box, but the buzzing remained consistant

Any ideas? Is there an inertia switch on these cars?

Check the ASD relay out for proper operation.

Was this a roll or?

ASD=Auto Shut Down relay? I just swapped it with the AC relay with no change.

It was a rear/front end sandwich accident.

The odometer and radio stay lit up even with the key out so there are some weird electrical things going on...bad ignition switch maybe?

Edit: It's also definatly not sparking. Could it be a bad ground? Whatever it hit in the front was higher than the bumper and pushed through the radiator support and into the engine compartment stopping just short of the fuse box. Where does the computer get it's ground?

Sounds a lot like a bad ground. Does everything go dim when the engine tries to kick over?

No, the dash lights stay lit, but it only cranks for maybe 1/8 of a second. Another thing I noticed is that it won't let you crank the engine over until the fuel pump relay stops buzzing.

It helps if the main ecu ground is connected to something. It's connection got taken out with the radiator support in the crash. I hooked it up and it fired right up. The odometer and radio still stay on with the key out, but I don't really care to figure that out.
