Don't worry about the 5.5" wheels. For us NA6 cars, back in the day, that's all we were allowed in Stock Class and it was still fun. Likely, more fun than anything else on the road at the time.

Yup. If you want to get crazy, get fresh tires and an alignment. Then go have fun.
Find something you like that is old and slow and drive it fast.
Something like a Vega could be fun. A Chevette perhaps? A muscle car that people would ignore? Mustang II.
Maybe a Capri. A slant six Dodge Dart in CAM.
Or drive your Miata since you have one.
