This is one of those "fractally wrong" statements. It's wrong in general and at any point you focus in on, it's just as wrong.

Sorry for the late response re: using Tire Rack steelies on my 135i.
I'd say the whole sprung mass is about the same as my stock wheel and tire considering the steelies are smaller and narrower than my summer setup.
I'm also not worried about weight for winter wheels.
The steering feels lighter because the fronts are 20 mm narrower than the summer tires and I also run RE71R's in the summer.
I use the Bridgestone Blizzak WS80. We didn't get much snow last winter (I probably put less than 500 total miles on the tires last winter as I was somewhat loathe to drive the car on the snow tires it was so warm so many days), but in the limited snow driving I did they felt really good.
