I replaced the steering box and power steering hoses on my 1990 Chevy pickup, thinking I was doing a good thing; I added a pint of Lucas Power Steering Elixer. I though it would provide better lubrication.
Every once in a while it acts as if I didn't have power steering. Usually at a most inoppertune time.

Is the Lucas too thick to pass through the 1/4" tubing?
-
How hard is it to flush this out? I've removed the lines and turned the wheel a few times, add fresh power steering fluid and flush again?

Is the thicker Lucas stuff the problem?
Thanks, Dan
Did you have a problem before? Ie why did you replace box?
I've seen power steering issues linger until EVERYthing is replaced because crap circulates and continues to mess stuff up
The one time I had this problem, it was a slipping belt. If you tried to steer too fast or while stationary, the pump would stall.
Was this a new box or some Mexico reman job? What was wrong with the old one?
The old box had buggered up threads where the lines came in, that was my leak.
I tried to flush out the Lucas, removing the return line shows quite a bit of power, big spray! Maybe it just needs to work a bit....
The Lucas shouldn't hurt anything, won't help either unless the pump or box is worn out or you have a leak.
Not sure what type of pump you got but I know there's been a host of problems with bad pressure relief valves or junk sticking the valve. It can be removed and cleaned. there are some adjustable after market units available too but stock should be fine if its the right one for the app.
