one my ecotec conversion into my alfa romeo spider.. i came across a problem...... steering linkage.. i could not use the oem locations without raising the engine.. quote a bit....  the outer links ..no issues.... the center link.......this is what i did.. drilled th steering arms to 5/8 inch at the machine shop...... 5/8 grade 8 bolt... 80 mm steel bushing,, safety washer,, qa1 rod end.. safety washer........ grade 8 nylock net.. tq down to 80 ft/bls tq on bith steering side and idea arm side.. all fittings are 5/8 inch.. and all of the parts are on the shank of the bolts.. not on the threaded parts.. will trim off exxes threaded part as seen in the photo

the bush that you see in the photo, is just for measurments..... the reason for the question.. i have no desire to kill myself..or g/f when driving the car

That makes me uneasy, but I could be wrong.

There's probably some sort of definition for that type of assembly and loading in engineering that you can plug things into, but I'm just thinking about how any load is going to try to lean the bushing over, creating a large force stretching (and bending?) the bolt relative to the steering force.

I'm not sure whether compliance or failure is the bigger concern, which is another question engineering analysis would answer.

the new bushing will be 5/8 i.d. and 1 inch o.d... the walls will be .187 inch thick

This is an application where a grade 8 bolt is wrong. the system will work, although you may feel some extra flex in it. The Alfa idler and pittman arm are massive enough to endure it for many stress cycles. Change over to a properly sized aircraft grade hex bolt, grade 8 is too brittle for this.

x19. what would you suggest?

My suggestion is in the post I made. If you do not understand it you need to read "Nuts, Bolts & Fasteners" by Caroll Smith. He explains the aircraft bolt sizing system and why you need to follow it far better than any other source. Then obey him 100%.

i bought some white pcv pipe today at home depot...i think there might be away to use the the ' inner ' upper in the photos.. and  use that and pass the centre link under the engine.. will use some heat to bend the the pcv pipe to a shape i maight use.. and it that fis some cromo steel tubuing from speedway motors, abd bend it to shape
