I have a crack that is gradually progressing into the field of vison on my race car. If it goes another 2" I won't pass tech for Summit Point. I just bought new slicks and race pads and have nothing left for new glass...(seriously... the fun coffers are DRY).

Is it possible to drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it while it's still legal? How? What kind of bit? Any other tricks? I do not want to haul my car 500 miles round trip to sit out because it grew in the trailer on the way down. I could stay home... but I went all in on the rest of the stuff to be competitive for the race so I'd like to be able use it this coming weekend.

My local glass place repairs cracks all the time. Make some phone calls and specify when you do that it's a race car.

A chip is easy to fix, a legitimate crack is not. There is surely a grm'r in the area with a parts e30. I understand it is a very simple change too.

I am guessing thats his e36, which has a glued windshield.

I have no answers for you, I have a crack on mine and got quoted $250 for a new one installed.

Yeah, like oldopelguy sez, try a glass place. They charge about $50. Or you can buy a windshield repair kit and maybe stop the crack. You can drill a hole with a glass drill bit (available at HF), add the resin stuff and probably stop it. Either way, you'll be out about $50.

Mine always seem to stop at the other edge of the windshield.

I have had some success in directing them down to the bottom so they won't encroach in to the drivers view. It's 50/50 at best though. Good luck.

I used a winshield repair kit on the mercedes and it worked until it didn't. Sucks because glass is so expensive for my car, a couple of heat/cold cycle will kill a windshield with a crack. I'd give the kit a try for 10$, the only cure is a new windshield.
