We went to a Street Survival school in Scottsboro AL, yesterday. This school was run by Scott and Jennifer Dobler, who are also real active in the Chattanooga Region of the SCCA. As many of you know, we are big supporters of this whole concept. I thought it only fair, that now that Tommy is old enough that we actually participate, as well.
Wow, were we impressed! These guys did a great job. The school was fun, informative and really focused on both car control and street skills. They even asked a police officer to come in and explain what you should do if you are pulled over and they brought an 18 Wheeler in, and made every kid get up into it and actually see how much visibility these guys have. Genius!
Every one of you should urge your kids, your coworkers kids and your friends kids to go through this program.
We'll have more in the magazine on our adventure shortly. The slippery wet skid pad was a highlight. They also let Tommy drive an old cop car.
Thanks Tim!! We appreciate your support and feedback. Glad to hear Tommy enjoyed himself. Looking forward to reading the upcoming article in Grassroots. Thanks for the magazines and goodies! Our Coaches were thrilled. Each student was able to have a copy of the magazine and we even had coaches wanting some.....of course, I sent them to the website! We have shared your post link on the CRSCCA forum. We're excited to know that Grassroots Motorsports is behind the concept of the Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School....it reaffirms that what we do is positive and effective for Teens! Take care.... and again, Thank You! Jennifer & Scott

Awesome. I wish they would have offered something like this when I was in high school. Could have saved my parents and I a lot of heartache and cashola.
Also looking forward to seeing the full story.
Anything like this for adults?
Great concept. I also urge my non car guy coworkers to send their kids to somthing like this. They ask me what I think about the car they should get and I tell them about programs like this first. What is the street price for somthing like this? Do any insurace carriers offer discoutns with completion of the course? My daughter is 4 and I have been thinking about this already. Me too. Problem is I only have a 7 minute commute. Guess that's why I feel dumber every year.
You can find answers here.

I think everyone should sit in a semi to see how little visibility they have.

I would love to get my daughter to one. In fact I think it probably would have helped her avoid the accident that recently wrote off her '98 Impreza.
Unfortunately, there are never any scheduled around here. I pestered the crap out of my local BMWCCA chapter because they had links but never had it scheduled. They kept advising me to watch the website. I watched and watched and watched and nothing appeared. Then one day something appeared and I pounced on it, to find that the class was already full with enough waiting list to double the event.
We drove 8 hours to go to this school. Honestly, the time in the car on the way up was nearly as valuable as the school. There were things that needed to be discussed, that we never seem to find time to talk about at home.
+1 on the school! My daughter took the school last year. She was scared of cars before then. Now she wants to autocross every chance she gets.

Some of the best conversations my father and I have had were while working on cars and while on road trips.
I'm looking into this for my niece next year. I'd like to see her avoid some of the mistakes we made.

BMWCCA usually does these for a very small fee. One of the problems is lack of affordable (cheap or free) venues. If you have access to an appropriate spot, let your local BMWCCA chapter activities director know about it & you might be able to make something happen. My son did a street survior class around 10 years ago in a Jeep with a lift kit. Now he drives much different stuff & so far,no accidents.
I am instructing at one in Blue Bell, PA on Saturday with the Del Val BMWCCA. I've done it a few times now... its a good program and it fills up fast. There are only 25 student spots and the wait list is 23 long. So... long/short... as soon as you hear one announced - sign up ASAP.
It was good meeting both you and Tommy on Sunday. I made a post earlier but you may not have seen it. You didn't miss anything in the afternoon as the rain hit just as the first run group's second runs were finishing, and drenched the lot. Then lightning ended up cancelling the event.
I look forward to the first SS school TRSCCA will be hosting in September. I know there is a huge value to this program.
If the school is called street survival, it should teach the epic clutch dump burn out that will actually get chicks, rather than completely repulsing them.
I'm looking forward to helping instruct at one later this year in South Portland, ME (has there ever been one of these in ME? At NHMS, I know)
Some BMW CCA chapters offer some sort of "advanced driving skills school," kinda sorta like Street Survival, which teaches basic car control skills. Many chapters require that you take one before attending a track day with them. You can also get good instruction at some (not all) autocross events.

Intinsive 4 & 1/2 day school.
Yes, yours truly Alan McCrispin is the Chief Driving Instructor.
This program is for teaching young drivers how to control their cars at the limit or in a panic situation.
So yes we do get them to do clutch dump, get sideways and squeal the tires but we show them to how regain control and learn to drive with their "rear" when these things happen.
We really push the students out of their comfort zone. It is a sight to behold to see the students transform throughout the day.
For me this is a very rewarding program, i love teaching the classroom part its fun to see them change from grumpy and ill to smiling and learning how to live.
did they teach you how to punch homeless people in the kidneys?
I hope my kids learn that..

I wish I had the time/means to get active in my local SCCA region here in Nashville so I could pressure them to bring Street Survival to Nashville. The nearest one is in Chatanooga, 2.5hrs away. That's a tough sell.

That seems like something you could/should teach your children yourself, no?
I haven't put them on the street yet.
They are still just glint in my eye.
err, testicles. whichever.

I second the request for an adult version of this also.
I enrolled my wife the BMW CCA's Advanced Driving Clinic thing. It was cool and she learned a lot and got more confident in the car and her abilities. However, more would be better. I wonder if any of the race driving schools have programs of this nature... Hmm....
