I've been thinking about building a kart for non-SCCA autocross (rules aren't a huge deal here), but I haven't found anything I like within a reasonable distance.

I've found a couple of quarter midgets. I know nothing about them, but they're cheap and have suspension. I'd never fit in a stock one, but I'm wondering if stretching the chassis would be a horrible idea.

Any thoughts?

Check out a "champ kart" - caged karts for ovals. IIRC they make a "Senior Champ" that a small 16-year-old can fit in.

All of the ones around here, are for kids and run either a stock or modified 5H.P. Briggs. By the time you made it long enough, wide enough, and tall enough, you'd almost be better off starting from scratch. The suspension is setup for a kid that weighs 50-80 lbs. so you'd probably end up chucking that, too. Throw enough time and money at it though, you could make it work. One of those 4 wheeler dune buggy thingies you see at Tractor Supply would be a better starting place,IMHO.

What about a Legends car? Basically, a bigger version of a quarter midget.

This isn't a bad idea.

In reply to Woody:

I'm sure you've considered the fact that it's an offset chassis. The driver sits on the left side. I've often wondered how a midget or sprint car built symetrically would do on a road course or autoX course.

Woody, have you seen the thread I started about building a "cycle kart on steroids"?

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/formula-quantum-where-are-the-designers-builders-and-drivers-of-this-car/44575/page1/

Since my last post I have purchased a race kart roller chassis for the wheels, tires, axles, bearings, and steering gear. I also bought 2 possible donor engines. One is a horizontal shaft 19hp B&S Vanguard Vtwin and the other is a Craftsman mower with a 19hp B&S flat boxer twin. I think I'm going to use the horizontal shaft engine in my first car possibly with a torque converter IF it really is available. If not, I'll go with a centrifugal clutch. It's got enough torque for that to work. The prolem with the idea is it's unlikely that any autoX would allow it to run. What would be ideal is for someone with enough land to allow them to run on makeshift "road courses" like the cycle kart originators did.

Anyway, you're not the only one on this forum that thinks in terms of VERY grass roots racing oportunities.

You'll need to log in to post.
