I own a 1990 Taurus SHO I have literally 2 options for struts Monroe sensatracs and koni adjustables. How would you go about expanding your options if you were me? I was guessing that i could measure the length and the bolt spacing on the top of the strut. I'm sure that i'm missing something to actually be able to make this work. Ok gurus what all do I need to consider.
What is wrong w/ the Koni's?
To expand your choices, you'd need to build or buy a set of strut housings that are designed to use universal strut cartridges.
I just want more options, maybe bilsteins, oh yeah there used to be tokicos but they are no longer produced apparently. What would it take to adapt struts for another vehicle to mine? Well from what I've heard the konis are the suck on this application.
take old strut housing, cut off top, rip out innards, insert the insert of your choice, go enjoy. my challenger was faced with a similar problem because the front wheel spindle is incorporated into the strut housing. The fronts were very blown. I did like above and used bilstein inserts from an A2 VW. As long as the insert will physically fit inside your old strut housing, you can use whatever.

Why would the Konis "the suck"?
Konis have rocked on all the cars I've tried them on over the last 20 years.

yeah man, i used duct tape as a spacer/bushing between the existing strut wall and the insert and it fit like a charm. took some trimming to get the length just right, but then I welded the screw cap on to the housing.
The problem isn't the TOP, the problem is the BOTTOM.
Tauruses use spigoted type strut bottoms, similar to some Euro econocars. (Focus, MkIV VW)
The top, hell, the top's just a stud that fits in a hole. Drill the strut mount or shim the hole as necessary.
