I'm planning on giving Rallycross a go soon, but currently run street tires which are going to have a hell of a time in the slimey stuff. I'm budget limited on buying a set of wheels and race tires, but I found a fellow who's got a set of studded snow tires on steelies that he's barely used and is selling on the cheap. The tread pattern looks like just the ticket, but I don't know if the sidewalls are stiff enough, or if studded tires are allowable or desirable.
Thoughts?

In stock, studs are only allowed when there's ice or snow present (although, local regions might allow it). In other classes they're okay as long as they're not homemade studs. I'm not sure how much it would help, though -- I've never really thought that through. I'd pump them up to 40-ish psi and see what happens.
studs really won't help you unless the surface is something like packed clay that is wet on top but hard below the surface. In "mud" courses studs will do nothing. They won't "hurt" though, they just won't be any better than a regular snow tire in soft/muddy conditions. As noted by wae, though, check with your region. I don't think ours allows studs at any time (since we don't have ice events).
Studs were banned nationally due to people thinking that Leon's VW was fast because of the studs, and not due to great driving and a great build of a car.
Also studs tend to rip up starting hoses.
At snow/ice, the studs only seem to last four or five runs before they are all ripped out, anyway.

ah right, I forgot I think that's why we can't use them - since we use pneumatic hoses.

An hour with some side cutters and you can pull all the studs out.
problem solved
Aww man, you guys in the regions that have fancy timing systems... We just have stopwatches ![cheeky cheeky](https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/static/ckeditor/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/tongue_smile.png)

Some of our courses we have 5 to 6 cars on course at once. Stopwatches would be a disaster lol...
In reply to irish44j :
We usually max out at 2 on course at a time. And when that happens, there's multiple people on timing. Each stopwatch holder is assigned a car to track.
