Has anyone tried to put a Boxster engine in a 914?
Renegade can put a Boxster transaxle in a 914.

An old friend of mine had a Boxster engine in a VW Vanagon. I recall he wanted to do the Boxster in a 914 thing. He ended up buying the 914, but I haven't heard from him since.

Sadly, it was not meant to be.
While the engine itself fit fine, the upper intake either put the throttle body into the firewall (if rotated forwards), or out through the engine lid (if rotated 180*). The upper intake bolt and intake port pattern is symmetrical, the upper can be bolted to the lower intake either way. I didn't want to cut a hole in the firewall or the engine lid. I experimented with a aftermarket fiberglass Turbo tail engine lid for more clearance, and it would have worked - barely - but I didn't want a huge tail on a '66 SWB long hood body.
I fabricated my own block-to-transaxle adapter from 6061 T6 aluminum, and engine cradle from a hot rod engine swap transmission crossmember. Cooling was going to be a bitch - and again, didn't want to cut holes in a virgin '66 912 body.
I ended up selling the 912 to a guy who planned to swap a Tesla drivetrain into it - but I kept the SHO, cleaned it up, and is now a coffeetable/art piece for my mancave:
