Hey folks.

Working on Wagons here at Clem's Wagon Works.

On my '97 Subaru, I'm putting the engine back together with new head gaskets.

I did the timing belt and water pump 19 months an 11,000 miles ago.  I'm usually pretty good about looking out for future Clem by keeping instructions and stuff...but the instructions to the timing kit aren't in my file.

know there were instructions on how and when to pull the pin on the tensioner that I followed, but I can't remember specifically.

This is the type of tensioner I have:

The question is...do I push the tensioner to the passenger side (kind of pre-loading the tensioner) and tighten the tensioner bolts before I pull the pin?   (as opposed to pulling the pin while the bolts are finger tight and THEN tightening the bolts)

I've already googled a bunch and haven't found the answer.  I'm guessing someone here knows off the top of their head.

Thanks for any help!

By the way...here's what it looks like if I preload the tensioner to the passenger side and then tighten the bolts...

bad lighting, but you can see space between the non-business-end of the tensioner and the engine casting.  That's my gloved-finger in the dark part of the photo trying to point it out.

Slide it to tighten the belt as much as possible, tighten the bolts, pull the pin.  You should have the belt tight enough you can slip the pin back in, or close to it.

Awesome...thanks so much!

That's what I was guessing, but I just didn't want to "guess" at this, you know.

Funny thing is...when I went to change the timing belt originally the bolts in the tensioner (installed long before I owned the car) were not tight.  So, evidently I and someone before me got lucky.
