In looking for a new car for she-who-must-be-obeyed I've stumbled upon a Subaru with the 4EAT with issues. From the seller, it no longer goes into reverse as of a month ago. Granted, it has over 206,000 miles so the trans fluid is probably ink black and burnt. Apparently it goes into forward gears okay. Haven't looked at the vehicle yet, but intend to do so in a couple days.
From what research I've done, seems common reasons for this symptom are low fluid level and mis-adjusted shifter linkage. Other than catastrophic transmission damage, what other things might cause such an issue? How does one adjust the shifter linkage to check?
