I need a 4.111 rear differential, but the only information I have seen on what car has what ratio only lists 5 speeds manual cars. Mine is a 5 speed, but there is an automatic 99 legacy with 95k miles in the junkyard and I don't know if its the same or not? Some have 4.444 also I believe, but I can't find anything that says one way or the other.
I found another EJ22 with 98k miles, a transaxle with about 170k (~$300 for both), so with a new rear diff that should be cover all the major parts that will wear out, and its not at all rusty, so it could quite possibly make it to 800k miles with just maintenance stuff. Its already over halfway there .
Does anyone have any idea on this? I just need to know how to figure out what gear ratio automatic legacys have and I can't find anything that says for sure, the only lists I can find just show manual and that's it.

Subaru used the following ratio's in the R-160 rear diff depending on model and options:
3.54:1 (SVX and early WRX)
3.70:1 (overseas use from my research years back, possibly XT variants)
3.90:1 (Early Legacy Turbo MT)
4.11:1 (Many platforms)
4.44:1 (Mainly automatic equipped Legacy/Impreza, and Forester)
There are/were tags on diff below the drain plugs that called out the ratios but may by now be MIA.
That said, I have a 4.11:1 (along with some other ratios) available for sale in MI as my days with Subaru are coming to an end.

Everything I found by googling says that Legacies with an autobox had 4.11:1.
3.90:1 with a 5 spd and and EJ22 and 4.11:1 with a 5 spd and EJ25. I was going to point you to northursalia.com but they don't have info for 4EAT's and now the website appears to be down.
Thanks, yeah its hard to tell. I know the 5 speed manual outback came with either 4.11 or 3.90 depending on year, but on the automatic there isn't much info at all. Not many legacies show up in the junkyard with under 200k anymore, so if that one I saw has the right gear ratio I will probably go grab the diff while the car is still there.
Also Foresters have the 4.11 gearing with the five speed. From what I've seen the automatics could also have a 3.54 gear

If your Library has the Alldata service, check that out. Alldata has extensive charts for diff ratios, LSD options, etc.

in case I missed it and someone already mentioned, the 5 speed manual 2.5RS Imprezas should all have 4.11 rear differentials (at least my 2000 does), in case that helps at all.
And also the 2.5L 5 speed Outback Sports from those years, if I recall.
And possibly the 5 speed Legacy Outback wagons from the same generation.
