The high beam switch appears to have failed on my 96 Outback.  A new one is about $750.00 and quite a bit of work to swap, so I was curious if anyone has had that happen and managed to repair the switch rather than getting a new one.

I figured at $750 you must be kidding because in the past year I have bought 2 running Legacy wagons (with working headlights) for less than $500.

Sure enough, I open RockAuto and the wiper control is $500+. Even then, at less than $750 it still is no bargain.

Search eBay and CL for someone parting out a Subaru.  Or, buy a whole running Subaru for less than $500. Keep the light switch and sell off the rest.

Maybe high beams are overrated? Maybe it's time for some real high beams...like rooftop high...so you can blind the living hell out of all who dare to approach.

Sounds like a part to get from the u-pull yard, I'm guess any Subaru from that era probably uses the same switch but you could cross reference on Rockauto to see what matches.

I just checked on www.car-part.com and there are tons offered in all parts of the country for $20-$75.

I've had a trafficator unit with a burnt-out high-beam switch opened up and repaired before by a professional auto electrician. I think the guy basically soldered new contacts onto the switch inside.

It looks like you could at one point get just the turn signal part. This website sells the whole shebang new for $321-375 depending on trim level and whether or not the car was equipped with an airbag. That's cheaper than rockauto for the real thing! https://www.subarupartsdeal.com/parts-list/1996-subaru-outback/switch-combination.html?Diagram=832_01

Can you disassemble it?

Older Mazdas used some of the same electricals as Subarus did (Subaru, Mazda, all made by Mitsubishi!  Or Hitachi)  and the turn signal switch was held together with Phillips head screws.  You can take it apart and clean up the contacts with emery paper and it'd work again.
