The transmission in my 96 Legacy appears to be leaking between the two halves of the case, which drips gear oil onto the exhaust right in front of the cat, and blows gear oil smoke into the car anytime I turn the heater on.  Is there any way to fix that other than swap the transmission?  I have two extra transmissions I could swap in but to avoid injuring myself I would have to do it slowly over a month or so which means buying another car to drive to work while I do it.

Why not rent a car for a week and then spend 2 weekends/week nights to get it put together? Surely a month is overkill if you have enough skill to attempt it?

I have swapped the transmission in this car twice before (first to replace the badly worn out original one with a junkyard one, and second to replace the first junkyard one that turned out to be broken with the one that's in it now) and the second time I did do it in two weekends and it took like 6 months to be able to move my hands normally again.  All I'd have to buy is just some gear oil and a pin for the shifter linkage but the time to do it is the problem.

Put some sort of shield between the leak and the exhaust to divert the flow and sell the car.

If it takes that long to swap a trans in a Subaru you are doing it wrong.  I had the trans in and out of my WRX in 2 hours or less each time I pulled it.

In reply to 93gsxturbo :

I have pulled them in the junkyard that fast, always took the engine out either first or at the same time though.  All the plugs and bolts and stuff involved in pulling the engine end up making my hands hurt for a long time after doing it if I do too much at once though.  It's annoying cause I'm only 13 years older than the car but feel like I'm too old to work on cars as much as I want to lol.
