So far I've found one guy (thank you google search) that has done it. This proves to me that it is possible.

Anyone here attempt this?

It's a 2.5L first gen. Forester.

I'm going to unbolt the motor mounts and gently lift it with my engine hoist.

Argh, I forget, are the motor mounts in the way of the oil pan?

When we had to emergency-yank the oil pan from the Supra, we used a ratchet strap and a 2x4 across the strut towers, and then blocks of wood between the motor mounts and their brackets. To save time underhood, instead of removing everything from the front of the engine, we just unbolted the radiator and picked it up with the engine too.

No, motor mounts are super easy to unbolt.

The back of the oil pan runs on top of the cross member and I can almost get at those bolts now. I think another inch or so and I'm home free. I'll post pics. if I tackle the job this weekend.

It's a pretty easy engine to pull, so not many people would bother trying to pull the pan with the engine in. Let us know how it goes, I'm curious what it takes as I've never tried.

Just as a follow up it CAN be pulled without pulling the motor. Disconnect the two lower motor mounts and the single mount on top... then lift with your motor puller crane. You'll also need a handy swivel head 3/8" ratched from HF.

I ended up pulling the motor anyway because I found a bad bearing and scored crankshaft.

You'll need to log in to post.
