Check out this home-built contraption. Ugly, but cool in a grassroots/function > form sort-of-way. No association to me at all, just posting it up for interests sake.

I would hope the rest of the car is engineered better than the roll bar.
It's a very nice one of those.

You know, I thought about a WRX- or 2.5RS-based Locost, too, but that's beyond my ability and budget.

If it's using a subaru transaxle it sure ain't 4wd. In the third picture that looks a lot more like a tie rod than a cv shaft to me.
Edit: found the website where the pictures are from.
Engine: EA81 1800CC L SERIES Transmission: SUBARU 4 SPEED RWD ONLY Weight: 380kg
Neat, but no thanks
When used in the stock AWD configuration, Subaru motors hang completely in front of the centerline of the front wheels. The back flange of the bellhousing on the motor side is about 4" IN FRONT of the centerline of the front wheels.
That ain't AWD.
I thought it was interesting, but ultimately, I don't see any advantage to it over a typical Locost.
FWIW, the guy says the roll bar is CAMS approved, (our equivalent to SCCA.)
mmm i love subarus =)
i should build one that is 4wd
and yes that cage is legal for its main sport, motorkanha

That would be a totally different vehicle with an AWD Subie drivetrain. With the weight in front of the front wheels it might do cool stoppies though.
In reply to MrJoshua:
the subaru engines that they use weigh so little, and i can take more weight off =) would be awesome 100 hp 4wd soft top open wheeler.
very noicee
In reply to pickstock:
You could get creative and mount the radiator back on the chassis to offset some of that nose weight as well.
