If I only was not so broke.
Base Impreza sedan 5 speed. $20,815.
That would be great if Subaru didn't dominate the "what was the worst car you've ever owned" thread.
I am guessing there are few, if any, actually available. With parts still being in somewhat short supply, I am guessing most automakers use what the have to build higher profit versions.

Hallelulah! Fact.
The Versa at 15K or the Civic Sport Hatchback at 25K are the other ones to consider. Sadly Corolla MT hatch is no longer available in NON GR Trim.
Buy it while you can, the sedan model and the manual transmission are going away for the 2024 (which seems to be more like 2023.5) model year.

Subaru is that weird brand that would also likely be at the top of many peoples "best car ever owned" thread..........it would be mine. My family has owned 6 Subaru's and they have all been flawless. All purchased new and maintained well. Never had a a blown or weepy head gasket. I bought my son a Subaru for his college years and he put on 120K trouble free miles in four years. He graduated and bought a new WRX and now drives a 2023 BRZ. Subaru is my go to brand. Oh and just to put a final point on Subaru's.......they hold their value incredibly well.

I've always described Subarus as terrible, but extremely likeable. I'd say the majority of people I know that have owned them have liked the car. But a significant portion have also had significant issues, and many have had quality complaints such as paint that's really easily damaged. Some of the issues seem to be just based on luck of whether you get a good one or not. And for what they are, many of the Subarus until pretty recently also get surprisingly bad fuel economy. But even a significant portion of the ones who had major issues would happily buy another.

PREACH.
A guy at work dailies a manual trans 2 door RS from ~2000. Man, I'd forgotten what a good looking car that is. The wing and the scoop write some checks the N/A 2.5 liter engine can't cash, but I bet it's still a blast to drive. Too bad rust ate them all.

Don't think I would go that far, but then again I've only owned two Subarus.
2015 BRZ Limited, 2023 BRZ Limited. Had no problems with the 2015 but traded it in on the '13 135i after about 35k miles because I wanted a change. What a mistake that was considering what the 135 did to my wallet in 18 months.
'23 BRZ, only had just over 4 months and 920 miles. The only issue I've had so far is the shop forgot to program the new TPMS on the new wheels so I can't see tire pressures. So I have to take it back up to them at some point for that.

I'm at 130K. If and when they do I've already planned on fix it and driving it some more.

For a minute I thought this was a VW thread...
I've been trashing them here for years, and taking considerable heat for it. Finally I feel vindicated.
I knew the truth would eventually come out

That is twice the power and better fuel economy than the last Subaru I drove on a regular basis. (My WRX was not a driving car)
My 11 Outback manual gets 26mpg mixed and 30mpg on the highway.
As for Subaru reliability.............I get it, those intermediate shaft bearings, bore scoring, faulty ECMs and catching fire does spoil the experience.
OK on a serious note; no they are not Toyotas but they're also not Yugos.
My only gripe with Subaru is the package stuff weirdly.............I have the same complaint about Hondas.

What other 20k or less new car with a manual transmission is available?
15k - Versa.

Well for what its worth, those happen to be the two Subarus that were collaborated with Toyota with the duel injection system and other things. Toyota has a way of making things seemingly better/more reliable.
The BRZ is far from a beacon of reliability. Those two examples are ridiculously low mileage, even a Subaru doesn't have problems by 35k :)
My wife is considering one if some things break her way in the next year or so, what are the specific problems with the new ones?
We had a 2004 impreza that she learned to drive on that she misses. (even though the automatic trans was going out and the headgaskets were leaking a bit of oil at 185k) She is actually kind of wanting to learn stick for this.
