For months I've been in search of why the wifes 98 Forester shakes when you step on the brakes. It started about 2 weeks after doing a complete brake overhaul ( clapiers and rotors front and rear. Everything has been nice and tight in the front end untill this weekend i can just feel a tiny bit of slop in the drivers tie rod ends.

So who's done inner tie rods on a subaru of the 98 vintage? Is there a crimped sheet metal lock tab like most? Do you bother to gring it off or do you just slap the wrench on and pull? What to use on the rack so you don't stress the bushings and pinon with rotational force? I used to have a pliers with a flat on one side and two semi cirlces on the other made for this but hav'ent seen them in 10+ years....

Thanks 44

Let me know how you do this. My '98 Forester is shaking under breaking now as well

Well, I'd go back to the brake job and fix the actual problem. Quality rotors, or Chinese junk? Decent pads? Sandblast pad mounting and caliper slides? Proper lube? Polish hub surface? Torque wheels properly? Slack in a tie rod end won't produce a shake, it will just make it more noticeable.

I've quad checked the rotors with a dial indicator. I've pulled them off hit them with rotoroy scotch bite disk. De-glaze the pads. Cleaned off all the rust and crap on the hub and the rotor. This last time the fronts got the mating surfaces glass beaded and the inside of the vanes. I've checke the calipers all the slide pins are good, all are lubed and slide freely ( took out pads and reinstalled to make sure) All the calipers seem to work fine pistons move out and retract slighlty, I've pushed a 1/2 gallon of fluid though all of them. Struts are (KYB GR2's) maybe 40,000 on them but look clean (no signs of a leak) Rotors seem to be static balanced very well. All the bushings look okay. Ball joints have no movemment jack under control arm large pry bar under hub. I'm about ready to drive it off a cliff At 210,000 i realy don't want to do to much more to it... I've ordered the tie rods inner and outers . The only thing i've been able to find is the slight slack in the tie rod and i only just found that this last tear down.

Tie rods changed. Not 100% fixed but loads better. it no longer feels light steering as it shakes when slowing down over 40mph. Still no pulse in the pedal, rotors still have less then .002 run out. Needs tires to pass inspection next month but it only shakes on slow down..
