Ok...work has a later 90's Subaru Forestor.
one big PITA problem with it. next to impossible to fill the gas tank.
squeeze pump handle, 3 seconds later it clicks off. squeeze, repeat 50 times to fill the tank
any ideas?

My Echo does the same thing every now and then. So, I'd be interested in hearing any theories on what the problem is.
My wife's camry does the same thing. Our solution is to turn the pump handle upside down when illing. It pretty much eliminates the problem.
I had it happen with my subaru. I bet you a beer it's the purge valve. I'm not sure if it's on the same spot with the forester, but on the impreza, its on the passenger side behind the rear wheel. You will see a black plastic box the size of a kleenex box. That is the charcoal canister. You will see a 1/4" rubber hose that comes off of it going towards the front of the car. The valve is attached to that hose. It has two wires attached to it. Unplug the rubber hose going in and out of it for your next fill up. If it fills no problem, then you found your problem. The purge valve costs just under $100. It is very easy to get at(at least on the impreza).
There's a '99 Forester in the self-serve LKQ salvage yard just south of town. I bet the purge valve is still there.
