I need one of those oil change thingies that sucks the oil out my dipstick tube.
Is one better than another?
It's for a boat that has no drain plug, or at least none I can find. The boat dealers say they just suck it and that I should just suck it up and pay the $100 fee + oil
I told them to suck it and now I need to suck it big time.
Any advise on dipstick sucking from anyone?
Hmm, that sucks. I got nothing but a bad pun, sorry. I guess I suck.
I know the MB crowd is heavily into the topside oil change, you might look there for reviews.
HF sells one that seems to be well liked http://www.harborfreight.com/6-1-4-quarter-gallon-oil-extractor-46149.html

You can get the one that is powered by a hand drill. That is what I used on my old Grew.
It is pretty common for boats not to have oil drain plugs.
So you need an oil sucker that doesn't suck, but in fact sucks really well? That's quite a predicament, some would say "that sucks".

Something like this: http://www.boatersland.com/itt172500003.html
We have one at work that I forget who made it but you basically pull a maybe 6 liter reservoir under a vacuum with a hand pump. I've done quickie oil remove and replace jobs on my car when I didn't have access to one of the bays, and we use it for diff fluid changes on vehicles where you can't drain the fluid without removing the rearend cover. Or the pumpkin. (WHY do Ford 9s have no drain plug???)
IIRC, it's the recommended procedure for certain German cars, as well.
I use this one from West Marine.
It does the job and I've never had a problem with it.
Are you trying to one up my dipstick thread?!

My dad has this one, it works OK. Make sure the oil isn't hot when you suck it out, and don't use it for gas since the gas will soften it up a little. I used it for gas once, then a year or two later of being used regularly for oil, most likely consistently hot, it im/exploded on my TDI. Mucho messy. I will say that Mityvac replaced it for us at no charge, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy one from them if I was in the market.
I only use it because the drain plug is cross threaded but not leaking, I'm too lazy to fix it, and the oil filter is on the top.

I didn't even see your thread till after I posted, but then I thought that things generally come in 3's so I reckon we'll see another pretty soon.
But I've got to say I'm sorry about your dipstick woes. As I understand it you couldn't afford to lose any of your dipstick or at least that's what it said on the bathroom wall at the truck stop.
couldn't you just use one of those one man brake bleeding kits that's powered by a mityvac?
well, make something like that out of a 5 gallon bucket or something powered by engine vacuum (from a different engine...).
In reply to bravenrace:
I assume you saw the episode it came from?
I did a topside trans fluid change with a drill pump.
In reply to Toyman01:
I too have this one, works great on the wife's '03 TDI, as well as a friend's '07 (similar engine). Doesn't work well on the '97 Miata. My brother has borrowed it for his boat, but I made him buy his own, since I don't like bringing it up to him, 10+ hours away.
Now that I know what to get let me ask if there any issues getting it all out?

lol, that's from last weeks episode. I can't explain.
Why not install a drain plug with a hose to hook the vacuum to. I don't see how you could ever get all the oil out through the dipstick even with a narrow tube inserted.
I'm not much of a boater though.
