some nice suggestions in there. However, I'm fairly certain that at least a couple of those didn't make it to the US. Just cause its 35 years old doesn't make it classic looking.

yeah, part of the reason that the mgb gt is being considered is because I can get a decent one for 4-5 grand. Also, if Clarkson is to be believed the TVRs are not really "handlers." even so you guys have given some awesome suggestions.
I went with a 73 Capri GT, 81 Alfa GTV6, 1984 RX7 5.0, 73 Triumph Stag, 86 Mustang LX 5.8, 96 Chev S10 406 so as you can tell I have a problem making a decision.

Yes. It has a 1.6L OHC piston engine (~70hp - almost the same as the B1600 truck). The badges are different. The sedans and wagons have lower trim but the coupes have the nicer steering wheels, dash and such like the Rx-3. The US seems to have more rotary powered cars than piston but the rest of the world, Canada included, seemed to have more piston models.

the AC, BC, and CC all made it to the states. Sadly the CC was beaten with an ugly stick when it was designed and the american mandated bumpers were just added salt to the wounds.

Hint: if you go CL'ing an RX3 or 808, add 'Mizer' to the search string. That was the 'gas mileage' version of the 808.

I saw that car at the Lake Compounce swap meet a few weeks ago. Yes, the wheels are every bit as scary in person. Body looked in reasonable shape, but it hadn't been driven in some time.

no one has mentioned any of the other porsches yet. I'm surprised. the 914 are very cool and can be had for under 5k. Added bonus is the removable targa top. 924 also meet your criteria.
Ford escort Mk 1 is also a damn cool car. not sure what they go for though. 
Ford maverick is a nice compact muscle car as well.
