Anybody else scare themselves lately on a cold morning when the sticky summer tires aren't so sticky? This was the first morning below 45 that I've driven the Mustang to work, and I was all kinds of sideways and lit up when I turned out of the neighborhood. I'm all for sideways and impromptu drift practice, but in traffic before I've had my morning coffee nearly required a return to the house for a change of shorts.
So, at what temp do your summer tires lose their grip?
In terms of day to day driving, it seems to start becoming noticeable around 45 and becomes bad around 35 for me...
I am a few days away from renewed hatred for mandatory TPMS. I will be staring at a warning light for about five months, due to my non-sensor equipped winter wheels.
Many years ago i got into a tankslapper after a quick 90 degree turn in near freezing temps on summer tires, and ended up perpendicular to the traffic flow with my nose hanging off the road onto the shoulder. I was so lucky there was no one in the oncoming lane or right behind me. Or that I didnt end up in the ditch.
And that was the day I learned that summer tires suck in the cold.
but they can also be fun. I agree though, it has not gotten that cold here yet.. but it will be soon time to retire the Ti to the garage and get the 900 out
