Don't know if the pump is toast, but if you're willing to drop the coin on a new one, do it as pre-emptive maintenance.
Get the old unit tested. If it's bad, you have already fixed the problem; if it's good, you have a spare you can save for the next time or sell to recoup some of the expense.

Just change the fluid and clean the filter in the bottom of the reservoir if it has one. Make sure you are using good synthetic ATF (Mobil 1 is good). If its borked - its a cheap junkyard part and easy to change out later.
In fact... if you need one I have one in the cellar. Pay the shipping and add a "six pack fee" on top of it and its yours.
