So lets assume that a certain student organization has access to a Ford 302. Now this isn't your normal 302, but a fully built 302 with a reported 700 HP at the crank. Seeing as how they already have a pretty bitching Miata built for autocross and are currently working on a second project to bring to the $2013 challenge, what should they put it into? The car we're currently working on doesn't have a build thread (that will be soon fixed), but it's a late model fox body mustang. We don't really have the (GRM) budget to swap in a new trans and diff which won't shatter under 15% throttle. Assume the 302'd car won't see the GRM track, and therefore budget, but don't think we have the cash lying around for anything ridiculous. So what would everyone build with a badass 302? Dedicated drag car, hillclimber, wheel to wheel track car; and what would be the chassis it goes into?

Well we consider a mountain anything over about 15' with a 1% grade so it would probably be a waste.

I was thinking of a ratrod. Maybe a 38 ford pickup.

drag....there are plenty of fox body drag cars. Tub and flare it, then put tires as wide as texas on it.

Yeah a drag car is pretty straight forward, but we can't have 2 fox bodies. Having two of the same cars starts to get repetitive and our organization is all about trying something we read on the internet last month while half drunk.

I'm pretty sure the guy has the dyno sheet. It's a funny story how we got this lead. Someone from the club was out getting his diff oil changed in his personal car because our impact gun is broken and the last person to change the oil torqued the bolt down to infinity. Well while he was waiting for the mechanic to finish he started talking to the other mechanics. The conversation turned to the club and what we do and it turns out the one of them said that he could fix our miata diff (rx-7 LSD). It's been leaking for a while and after someone tried to fix it through a rebuild the pinion gear seized up. The other mechanic loved what we were doing and said that he had an engine he would be willing to sell, if we could find something to do with it. Turns out he was a drag guy who built this for a project but ended up going with a big block and it's just been sitting ever since. I know it's got forded internals and it's been overbored to 369 ci. We're going to try our best to make this deal happen because one way or anther we'll use that bad boy in something.

It would be the first 302 based 369ci motor I've heard of as well. 2 hp per inch isn't easy naturally aspirated.

If it's that radical it won't live in anything but a drag race application. My suggestions then are non mustang fox body, S-10, FB RX7.

If it truly can make over 500hp, it has to have an aftermarket block, and nowadays you can get 8.2 deck height blocks that can be bored out to 400 Chevy size pistons. So theoretical 4.125" bore and 3.4" stroke (you CAN fit more stroke in that block but it ain't pretty) gets you 364". 30-over pistons is 369".

IMO it's mainly for bragging rights or 8.2 deck height rules. Without those rules constraints, why not start with a 351W? It's not like those aftermarket 8.2 blocks are very light.

a reliable street/ strip/ auto-x 302 that will live through seasons will be around 400hp

If it's a stock block - it's not 369 cubes. Not enough cylinder wall thickness in the thin-wall cast late model Ford blocks to get those cubes. You can usually take them .030" over - sometimes .040" over. Rarely can you get .060" out of them.

You can get 374 by using a Dart 4.125" bore block taken out to 4.185" bore (.060" over) with a 3.4" stroker crank. Check the block - if it's not aftermarket then the most you have is 347 or 349. And with a 2-bolt main stroker -- it's not gonna make 700hp for very long....

Whatever it is - put it in a Volvo 242. :)

Long version: 3.6" stroke and the crank ends up being mostly heavy metal after you get the counterweights small enough to clear the pistons.

And as everyone pointed out, the stock castings will not live long past ~450hp no matter if you get there with power adders or good old fashioned RPM.

I almost added -- 'well, you could get there with a custom crank/rod/piston super stroker combo', but didn't think anyone would be silly enough to mess with that when there are SO many other options.

The block is actually 396 CI, it was a typo. We should be getting it in here pretty soon so we'll know more about if the block is aftermarket or not. I'm assuming it has to be stroked and overbored to get an extra 94 ci out of it. It had a 700 cfm carb along with many other goodies. We'll be sure to throw up some pictures when we get it in.
