Talk me into, out of, or what else I could spend my theoretical $20k on.
This particular GTI appears to be lowered. What else has been done? Has it been flashed? If so how much do you care about powertrain warranty?
I'll be watching this thread, as I've been secretly eyeing a Golf R. Having been historically against German cars it will be interesting to see how much support you get on this thread.
No LSD and down 10hp from the performance package models. Thats all I have for talking you out of it. Uhhh, no bad reviews to feel bad about? Your face might hurt from smiling? Wrong eheel drive?
Perhaps I can talk you into a Fiesta ST? Save a few $$$, send that money to Cobb and Montune, enjoy the best dance partner out there? Smaller, interior two steps down, but sooooooo fun.

Not sure if its coil-overs or shocks, but there is the stock suspension in the trunk. Engine bay looks stock, not sure on a flash.

Good to know. I do get better pricing on fords, but the few new ones i've driven, the message center annoys me when I'm just trying to get the mileage etc... from the vehicle.
You can build 10 challenge cars. You can buy a nice used Porsche.
Srt4 and Dakota rt, and vacation and a couple of stocks.
You asked for a way to spend 20k....

He should know the platform, god knows kris knows enough of us with them.
So basically don't get this GTI - Get a new one.
Are you fair skinned? If so, the glow from the CEL might cause early melanoma. Lots of good cars without the headaches out there for that cash.
Hell, this would be a great option : http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/669382416/overview/
Spend $1000 on an exhaust and tune and make more power than the GTI to the wheels, have $5k for spending money AND have another 30k miles of warranty.
no LSD on a torquey FWD car = no buy for me. I don't care how good people claim it is (looking at Focus ST).
If I bought a Focus ST I would ask the Ford Performance shop at the dealership to put their LSD in before I even touch the car. I wouldn't buy a GTI without the perf package.
LOL, I just drove a FoST today. Nice car, have to decided if I can live with the large B pillar. Also can't decide if new manual cars all have the engagement point at the floor or if all new cars push the steering wheel so far out I sit farther back than normal.
For 20k you could buy Chrysler, not a Chrysler, but the actual entire company. Just something to consider.
Buy a miata, turbo charge it, and then buy your 4 door people hauler with the 10-13k leftover. :)
I almost always would go for slightly used (get past the immediate depreciation of driving off the lot and a few miles). Seems like a lot of waste of money in depreciation for a new car when a 2-3 year old car is probably just as reliable if not more depending on if the kinks are worked out already.
I also cannot recommend the GTI as it is a VW, but if that's your thing then that's your thing. I just hate working on them.
