The title pretty much sums up the questions.  Or does it just invite more questions?

Honda has, in my opinion has been on the losing end of deals with other manufactures before.  (Isuzu and GM)

Nissan has been having issues for years.

1)Hey, lets make the Altima so big and fancy it competes with the Maxima!

2)Not just a CVT, but a bad CVT in all the things!

3)How many SUVs does one manufacture need?

And what about Renault?  As a major stakeholder in Nissan, would Renault's prize in this be Nissan making a comeback?

Rumor is that Foxconn is trying to buy a large part of Renault's ownership shares of Nissan:

That could also be motivating Honda (or the Japanese government) to consider a merger to keep more outside nations from controlling too much of historic Japanese brands.

Renault recently sold a chunk of it's Nissan shares back to Nissan. I'm not sure why.

Foxconn might be the sort of company that can turn Nissan around. I think that sounds more promising than Honda. They are experts at low margin,  large volume manufacturing. A lot of auto manufacturing involves integration and final assembly of components from suppliers. This is very similar to what foxconn does.

This was an angle that I never considered until it was mentioned here on the forum.

I've been led to believe that the Japanese government has the influence/interest to keep Japanese companies Japanese, so they would have little issue leaning on another company–like Honda–to "do the right thing" and commit to a merger.
