Looking to relocate, wondering what the autocross life is like. Seems like CFR is huge with widely spaced events, and also some non-SCCA clubs - anyone know how well run and safe the events are? Are there any active marque clubs that welcome non-marque cars?

Welcome.

There are around a dozen autocross clubs in FL, in addition to marque clubs. http://www.autocross.com/autoc/seclub.shtml The marque clubs I know of that do autocross-type stuff are Porsche Club of America, the Jaguar Club, and the Mini clubs. There are probably others.

The closest to you is probably Buccaneer Region SCCA. I'm a MSCC member, and a pretty casual autocrosser; i.e. I only participate in our events. Many of our members are also CFR members.

Most area marque clubs allow cars of different makes to participate. Our club president - who drives and evo - is an instructor for Porsche Club of America. (He's also one of the "expert drivers" for the GRM challenge.) I've run a geo storm at a jaguar slalom event. That event also had a couple cameros and a bug eyed sprite.

It's also worth noting that different Florida clubs sometimes work together. When MSCC hosted the state autocross finals and needed extra cones, CFR loaned us some of theirs. When PCA rented Sebring for a track day/HPDE, they had us come down and throw an autocross in the paddock area so that their members would have something to do between heats.

BTW, our upcoming autocross school would be a great chance to meet locals....

There is an event schedule and links to all the clubs on Tampa racing. Hope this helps.

CFR west coast region runs in Brooksville about 30-45 minutes north of Tampa. There's a few events every year not too far away at Sebring which is a great site that allows for some really long courses.

Martin Sports car club holds a number of central Florida events every year and are a great club to run with.

I ran my Toyota at a PCA event once, they do have dates where they allow non p-cars to participate.

I am not sure of the region but Fort Meyers to the South is a really great site as well.

I don't know how it compares to the rest of the country but I think you could find something almost every weekend for 11 months out of the year if you are willing to drive up to 2 or 3 hours.

MSCC is pretty active. We have at least one event each month. Occasionally there's another activity, too. (This month, the extra one is a our autocross school.) 10 months of the year our events are at the Lake County Training Center, a site we rent from the school board. (It is their police school training site for automobile and firearms handling.) At least twice a year we do higher speed events at bigger sites (e.g. Gainesville Raceway's test track, Sebring's paddock, Central Florida Road Course, etc.) We call those "Mini-Prix" events. The one for this spring will be in the parking lot of the Orlando Convention Center, which is the same site that Mazda rented for their central florida stop of the Zoom-Zoom driving event.

There's an NCCC Corvette club in the Tampa area that does non-points practice-day events just about every month at Hernando Airport. They are a friendly bunch. Check www.ncccsouth.com and click on "upcoming events in the south" for a flyer and contact info. Pretty sure they are open to other marques.

Just noticed there are no flyers posted yet. Here's a link to their web page, w/ contact info though: http://www.floridacorvetteracing.com/
