I've been doing some web surfing and came across a reference to the Tatra DOHC air cooled V8.   How would one get something like that shipped from Europe to the States?

Hungary Bill is our resident "throw crap in a big box and then fight with customs to get it out" expert. He's currently someplace hot and sandy, but I'd ask him.

I suspect they are more valuable than you think.

There’s a number of them over here. My in-laws’ former neighbor (they just moved, he’s still there) has a few Tatras. They’re gorgeous.

In reply to dculberson :

Supposedly they made millions of them.  The engines ought to be fairly common.

I saw a Tatra that was completely beat go for $25k at auction. I don't know that you would find a cheap engine.

The only tatras that ever came close to being made in the millions are the trucks.

I will assume that when you say dohc you are referring to the engine in the 70's and 80's 613 series cars. Intriguing specs. 176hp out of 3.5 liters was impressive for the time.

If any of those cars made it to North America they would be in Canada. They still sell for North of 20k in Europe. I would think eBay.co.uk would be a good place to look. The bodies will have disintegrated though.

One of the neat things about Soviet block autos is that they were so difficult to acquire that they were well taken care of. Ladas in particular show up in remarkable condition for their age.

It is also why they stayed with the same body styles for so long. In some cases it was as much as 5 years between ordering and delivery of a car so they couldn't change them as it wouldn't be what the customer ordered.

I will import a Lada 2101 someday.

Canada got Skodas, Ladas, Dacias, etc but never those 70s and 80s Tatras. :(

They were sold in small numbers in the UK.

Dave Burnham Citroen restored a Tatra a few years ago including the engine.   I saw the engine when it was all apart.

Somehow our bed time story got us to this website. Bunches of military Tatra air cooled engines.
