Yeah, like the title says. Considering a RWD conversion of a 2.2 or 2.5 Chrysler turbo motor. I understand there's a Dakota and possibly a Liberty bellhousing, but what transmissions does a poor benighted fool look for?

Toyota R154 and its kissing cousins.

Ah, so something like a Supra trans? Cool.

R154, AX15, MA5. Anything that uses the AX15 trans to bellhousing pattern. Bellhousing is a 94-95 dakota piece ONLY. Pre 94 was a different trans, 96 up used the 2.5 AMC engine. Liberty/Wrangler 2.4 bell bolts up but the input shaft length doesn't match up.

If you're thinking newer, you might consider an SRT4 motor. That would use a 2.4/5 speed Liberty bellhousing. Apparently they made them, but I've never seen one. You were a jeep service advisor round that time, right? Have you seen any?

R154 is 3rd gen supra turbo only. AX15 apparently can't take as much power, and shifts a lot more like a truck. Lots easier to find, though. (There will be one bolted to the other side of that '94-'95 Dakota bellhousing you find.)

Pre-'94 four cylinder Dakotas used an NP-535 five speed. It's not suitable for performance use.

On the cheap . . . W58 (the lower rated Supra trans). It doesn't come with the Supra turbo tax of the R154.

MA5/AR5 - Can be found all day for less than 5 c-notes in good condition.

They came in GM minitrucks (Colorado and Canyon) and GM Roadsters (Solstice, Sky).

They can take a fair amount of abuse (Mallet uses these behind LS2 in their hotrod GM roadsters).

I'm not sure, but I think the W58 uses a different bellhousing-to-transmission bolt pattern than the R154. I hope I'm wrong, because W58's are neither scarce nor expensive.

I didn't realize the MA5s were getting so cheap. I've never seen an R154 for under ~$300, and I've been idly looking for a long time (different Dakota bellhousing will put it behind a small-block Mopar).

You are right . . . my bad:

Jeep AX5, Toyota G52, G58, W55, W56, W57 and W58 5-speeds all share a common face pattern on the case (Small pattern). As such, any 88-99 Jeep 2.5L bellhousing (NOT Dakota)

I originally looked at the MA5 for my 4.8L Volvo project. But decided to use this rebuilt Saginaw I got for $100.
