I think I would be a little worried diving hard into a corner in a Smart. Maybe it's just me.
Today at deutsche classic there were about 15-20 smart cars and when reading a brochure I realized they had 4 times the hp of my current vw.

It seemed to do ok...
there were 112 cars at the autocross. FTD was 56.2 seconds or so. Worst times were in the low 70s (afternoon session was wet course). The Smart had FTD 68 seconds, so it did beat about 20 cars, including a Scion xD, a Civic Si, a Pontiac GTO, an M3, and a few 3-series (this ws a BMW club event).
For comparison, I ran mostly 59's in the WRX with only swaybars and RE01R's...with most of the course wet.
I do find myself tempted.. not that I can afford one right now
Wait for the after market to come up to the plate with suspension upgrades. Tires, Brakes, Springs, Dampers. Then the engine mods can begin.
