I was born in Chicago and grew up in the MJ era, and I was a fan. Even after we moved away, I saw 23's everywhere thru my teenage years. I added it my first email address which I still use, I had it on license plates without requesting it, my address for a while when I first moved out on my own, etc. When it came time for permanent numbers, there was no question
I use the number 47. I work on CH-47 Helicopters and I was 47 when I learned about autocross. Needed a 2 digit number that I can change because at the time my daughter was co-driving with me. We swapped digits around so she was 74. Alabama has counties numbered for license plates and the county I race in is 47 although I live just barely into another county that's numbered 44 on license plates but my car doesn't show county number on the license plate, I have retired military (army) license plates on my cars.
48
Reason 1: I was 48 when i returned to serious racing after a long sabbatical.
Reason 2: It was easy when using a small amount of tape to convert it to 43, 46, 18, 13, 16 ...
Reason 3: Dan Gurney

Whoa! Knight Rotax, very nice!
When I first raced, my dad and I ran 667 as my uncle was 666 and we traveled to races together. When we bought a new car, we changed to 791. My dad liked that the numbers fit nicely on the number plate on the car
I've been #88 for years now. Couple reasons, one, I like double numbers, the symmetry appeals to me. It's also the year I graduated from high school:

The MX-3 was 74 when I got it, easy to put on with duct tape (lemons), had to change it to 70 when someone else had 74, but that was picked because it also used straight tape..
The last race I used 28, can anyone guess why? ;)
Can't do it for Champ because of there stupid stickers, but for Lemons it was going to get a Z outline added..

What is the "T" in TESP?
At the first event I ever went to, I wanted to run 13, because that's what I wore in college. Unfortunately, it was already taken by somebody who'd pre-registered the number for the year.
So, I chose zero, since I was just some nobody that showed up.
The timing software crashed when they tried to record my first run.
I've used zero ever since.
53 and NOT because of the "love bug", but because that was the year I was born. I didn't even realize it was the love bug number until someone pointed it out to me at an event. Later on, at another event, I think it was Hutchinson Island, someone had a Herbie replica and there it was, 53 in all its glory. My number back in my drag racing days was 2127, but that was because that is what the NHRA gave me and with their numbers the first digit represents your home division.
#71. Was my number playing American Football in full pads from the age of six to fifteen, back in the days when I should have been in a kart if I ever wanted to be serious about this. I wasn't skilled enough to be one of the gifted few that had the skills to actually hold the ball, and I hated every single moment of it. When I decided to quit, my dad (his insistance was the only reason I'd ever played at all) had a full-tilt "I HAVE NO SON!!" moment.
Here in SEDIV SCCA at the time, #71 was somebody's permanent number. But at least I got to use it at my first drivers' school. Y'all that remember my old GRM online racing series might remember that I was pretty attached to the number after I had to stop racing for real.

It's a MX-3 with a Z28 front end. You did a good job, from this distance it almost looks factory.

That's how street tire classes are (were?), designated in Detroit Council events.
I mostly used two different numbers during my 30 years of on & off club racing. The first was #80 as that was the year of the Fiesta that I raced, nothing special there.
Later when I upgraded my race car to a 1993 Cobra R production #58, I went with #58. No surprise there either.
Later when I downgraded to a 1988 VW I used #88 briefly until #80 became available again. I then reverted to #80. Just like you have your favorite pair of old shoes, well I have a favorite number.

Whoa! I missed that until you pointed it out. I distinctly remember pausing on the post, and trying to think of cultural references to 28, wondering if it was some sportball player, then realizing it was, duh, a Camaro. It's even crazier when you realize it should be no-wheel-drive with this pairing. It is impressively done.
Around 2003 I went to register for the first autocross I'd entered in over 25 years. Tried at least half a dozen numbers, all of which were taken.
So I reached into my pocket, pulled out a quarter, and used the last two numbers in the date. Been using the 85 ever since. For the track, a little blue painter's tape on the leading edges of the numbers helps keep them on the car and maybe gives the numbers a little 3-D effect.
I know, I don't always get them quite straight.

Some regions put it at the end of the open class, too.
I've always used 256 because it's two to the eighth. This means that in hexadecimal (base 16) it's a nice round number -- 0x100. Yes, i'm a nerd. :)
Just as a general observation. There appears to be a preponderance of Miata(s) on this thread. Which of course is awesome and proves it really is the answer.
I've always use 18 because that's how old I was when I started racing.
I'm always surprised because it's almost never taken. And when it is, I like 81 as well.
#23. Because that's the number the Abomination ran at the Challenge in '06.

Mine is #74
sometimes if I had too much to drink and this topic comes up I say that 74 comes from a state a balance, in western cultures the #7 is lucky, whereas in eastern cultures the #4 is unlucky, it is how we have balance on the circuit that makes them compliment eachother as we balance our chi...
I like it. Sort of like the idea of driving a Swedish car with German electronics and turbocharging, a Japanese transmission, an English rear drive, Italian brakes, American suspension, and French tires. It's the whole world come together to create the most perfect motor car. But instead they made the S60R, which given the culture clash, turned out pretty good regardless. I ran that car, when I ran it, with 588, because Night Witches is the best Sabaton song ever. Well one of them anyway. Picking "the best Sabaton song" is like picking your favorite child.
but in reality, the numbers were easy to do with tape...
I think it is an RX-7 thing. Because okay, you ran 74 on your FC, right?
moxnix ran 74 on his PR/MR FC, now owned by EvanB because I guess he was jealous of how much my car broke vs. his Miata's granite like reliability
And then there is the '81 that I got from Charles Wright, which was also a red car, and he ran it with, you guessed it:
Yeah I ran 74 through rallyX until I did stage rally where that number was already taken by some old timer, add a 1 to the front or back and holy cow totally unique number! wowwzers.
strange coincidence indeed.
No race numbers, but I did select auto-x numbers based on my car. My e30 is powered by an M42B18 engine...so I picked 42 as a number. While I'm usually the only E30, I didn't want to pick "30" so I could reverse the numbers if 42 wasn't available.
I didn't get any good photos the one event I was able to use the magnetic #s.
I usually run one of two numbers:
61, because it is easy to make it into several different numbers with magnetic race numbers.
92, because my Dad picked it as a number for the challenge car we entered together, which at the time was our ages added up. Lost him in 2011, and try to run 92 as my number for the challenge.
