I have two of those.
For me v-8 is Ford small block 302, hands down.
6 cyl is S38 in BMW M1, M5(1st gen) and M6(first gen).
v12, ferrari.
They made other engines? j/k :)
What about the infamous BRM H-16?

or the equally infamous Matra V-12?

and I can't BELIEVE I forgot the most infamous of all, the RC166 Honda:

That's not the best sample. I've got a wav file off the web that's a lot better.

This. Absolutely. Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time.
My buddy's 95 Mustang 5.0L with long tubes, dr Gas X-pipe, and Bassani mufflers. Probably one of the better sounding NA Mustangs I have come across. If I wasn't going turbo I'd be putting an identical system on my car.

I've always been a fan of the turbo 5cyl Volvo and Audi engines. Ferrari knows how to make great sounding V8 and 12cyl engines.
The Ferrari 333SP is the best sounding engine:
And I will love & tolerate the crap out of anyone who disagrees.

That's pretty good, I'll grant you that...
The engine sound that literally gave me chills was the Jaguar V12 IMSA car. That thing would rev and rev, and about the time you were sure, "okay, he certainly has to shift by now", it would rev another couple thousand rpm more. Just imcredible... a mechanical symphony of the best kind.
That aside, I was shocked and very impressed by a VW Golf that passed on the freeway. It was a worked-over R32 with the V6 in it and oh my did it sound awesome.

Mguar needs to come explain how us lowly humans can manufacture such a beast in our garage on a shoe string budget.

Easy, build a chassis table, buy the engine of your dreams, sit it at the end of the chassis you prefer, and build the car around it. I've done it twice now

Yes, Judd V8, best sounding motor in the world.

I need to shoot a video of the M60B30 I have next time I'm in the country . . .

Yeah, I have followed both of your builds. I don't think I can keep focus that long. Good stuff though.

Ah yes, nothing like a P-51 on Max Cruise. almost forgot, it has been so long.
My favorite crossplane V8 would have to go to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7iy37PPlac
Favorite flatplane V8 I would have to hand to the F40, favorite V12 would be the F50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcSnaHcAlKU

This probably won't qualify as "best sounding" but it's interesting nevertheless...
