After her Jetta was totaled, the wife was on the hunt for a new car. We finally got the settlement last week and she started looking. She wanted something small and efficient. I had to talk her out of buying a two seater as it seemed impractical with a little one even with the Volvo wagon as a family hauler.
Yesterday she picked this up:
She might have some competition for driving it too:
It's an 85 GTI in pretty amazing shape. We paid $1250. It's not completely rust free but it's pretty close. We bought it from an older gentleman who had owned it since 98. It runs a little rough, it had been stored in a barn for about a year before we picked it up. Seller said bad gas and i'm inclined to believe him since it was already running way better when we picked it up than it was on the test drive. Only other problems are a bad speedo cable and a super stiff clutch.
enjoy,

Nice score! Your wife does have good taste.
One of my coworkers picked up a MK2 GTI in similarly nice condition, recently. Awesome little cars. He paid a good deal more than that, though.
Good job Jacques (on both)!
No more MR2s or Fieros for awhile I bet....
Wow, What a find... I'm jealous.
I would take a nice 1st or 2nd gen GTI in a heartbeat

We'll see, she was ready to jump on a t-top 1G MR2 in Cincy but it turned out to be an auto.
Nice car, im thinking about picking one of those up too. Autohaus az has tons of cheap parts that are good quality, dont make the mistake of using non oem parts if you can still get factory stuff, becasue there is usually a huge quality difference. Even if it drives farily well, the struts and suspension bushings are likely pretty bad, bilstien hd shocks are the only choice for a street car that makes sense, and audi tt control arm bushings and mk3 vr6 strut bearing conversion is also worthwhile.
Nice car, looks very clean.
I just sold my 1990 Jetta GLI 16v a few months ago. It was a very fun car. It was a blast to drive and got decent gas mileage. Very easy car to work on and lots of parts out there. Heater core replacement on a car with a/c is a $%*&!, but everything else was pretty easy to fix. Mine had 180k, didn't burn oil and still pulled hard. Seemed like it had a lot of life left in it.
Kinda funny, got an email from the seller today saying another guy was offering him more than $1250 for it. He gave us the guys email "if we wanted to make a quick buck."
We're definitely keeping it though, i never thought i'd say this but i'm tired of car shopping for now.
oh, I thought maybe Springsteen had gotten a GTI
