In the Caribbean probably about 95% of all motorsport is grassroots, so showing cars built on a tight budget is no big deal. Then you have cars that, word is, were literally pulled out of a field just a few days in advance, and you'd have no reason to doubt it:

I was in that event. Made it to round 4 of 6, which I'm proud of considering the competition and that it was my first dexterity.

BTW, the event was held in a supermarket parking lot just a few minutes from my house and filled my town up like you wouldn't think is possible on a small island. We're talking cars-parked-aside-highways, nowhere-to-walk, rivers-of-piss crowded. Competitors were asked to leave immediately on being eliminated to free up space in the car tetris game that was the lineup. It was also the first and last time my parents watched me drive competitively

Racing is really big in Puerto Rico, too- it just has to be during the part of the year that we are not down there. It was mainly drag racing, but over the past decade, the autocross scene really got going, and now road racing is getting bigger and bigger.

Remember a few years ago, a Trans Am race was held in Puerto Rico.

If someone could find a small ship to move cars around cheap, there could be a pretty interesting Caribbean championship, I think.

Darg racing's coming to Barbados too, and the number of competitors is going to be off the charts. Drag racing is already the most popular motorsport, if you get what I mean

I can't recall the last time I saw somebody half hanging out the passenger window during a race

Sure looks like everybody was having a good time!

Trinidad, Jamaica and Grand Cayman also have quite a bit of competition. Good friend of mine in Trinidad is class Caribbean champ in a highly modified Civic. Road racing. Gov closed thier race course, but they will have a new one shortly. Rally is popular in Jamaica, with the crowds all over the course during competition.

I think that was the driver hanging out of the car!

Car sounded like in ran ok.

Your junk cars pulled out of fields have less rust than our 5 yo dailey drivers.

Sad, but true.

How many insurance companies would cover that type of event here (insert hysterically laughing icon here)

2 thoughts.. : we just thought the Japanese invented the "sport" of drifting

and can you imagine a SCCA safety steward being at that event in an official capacity .... trees, two cars that close to each other and the driver hanging out of the car

How many people hit the trees?

Only one guy gently tapped a tree.

(edit: remove dyslexic episode)

We get event insurance, but many road insurance companies will cut you off if they find out you're doing events with the car (or suspect you of street racing)...like mine, and their building actually overlooks that parking lot

And to think my safety steward yells at me if any part of a course is pointed straight at the crowd. Circling trees, no helmets, two cars in the same vicinity -yikes!

On my last run I tried to catch up by blazing towards the finish line at WOT, and there are people in that direction. They thought my throttle jammed open and started to run, but I nailed the brakes on the finish line and brought it to a quick stop. The event organizer didn't like that one.
