Another reason why a 1995 Saturn SW2 is the obvious answer. It might be that the wagon can't fit quite as much tires as the coupe, but 245s on 9" wide wheels are likely possible.

My suggestion was going to be an early impreza wagon or a 1st gen legacy turbo wagon....but then I saw you ruled those out.
A few years back I remember seeing an 80's 4wd civic wagon with a b-series for sale..that thing was bad ass.
One car I have always liked but that is not exactly a lightweight is the Accord wagon, like 96ish...I think they are around 3000, so its a porker but they can be gorgeous cars!

It's way above your weight limit (I think my car weighs around 3300), but a Jetta wagon with a 1.8t can get 30 mpg on a good day and can be modded to produce stupid amounts of power (240 is pretty easy). If you ignore the "slam-it-to-the-ground" crowd, they can be made to handle reasonably well.
A TDI version like mine will easily get 40+ mpg in modded form, 50 mpg stock.
There is a "unicorn" VR6/6spd version that was made in small numbers as well, but those make my TDI look common.
Of the cars mentioned so far, the Focus is the only one that interests me.

I'm sure you could do more on the 'Scort too, if we breach the plane of the fender lip like you did on the Saturn. I was talking about keeping it all under the coachwork. That said, it looks great as it sat there.

needs to be a darker color.....IMO. the use of the sedan rear doors makes the whole hatch area look like an afterthought, lets just cut the rear side windows to fit the doors! bright colors only make it stand out even more.

Hrmm... did not know that. Thought the wagons kept the flat top since pretty much the entire car save for the front clip didn't change.

How about the Suzuki Aerio wagon? I know nothing about them but I always thought they looked cool. The PT Cruiser is another good choice. I Just bought one with the 2.4 turbo and 5 speed and really like it!

Yep it's the same. 93 and 00 just confirmed for same panel.
The weight limit is so low that you miss out on the all the decent wagons. No 3 series, no Jetta, no WRX. Can't say I would rather have a Saturn, Elantra, or Focus instead. I would take the weight penalty, but that's just me.

The Escort Wagon can easily be upgraded with ZX2SR parts The Focus wagon can easily be made into an SVT.
Pushes your weight limit but beats most cars on the list by more than 100hp and gets 27mpg with a tune.
