Titles says it all? Gotta seat two adults, three kids. Mileage not a concern but reliability IS!
Uhh...then the best option is a 2001 Honda Accord, then go to a pick -n- pull and get a Jag hood ornament for the hood and emblems for the back.
Seriously, that's about as good as it'll get. Jags at any price point are trouble. $4k might get you a well kept 15 year old XJ. But a 15 year old Jag is going to give you fits no matter how well kept.

Too berkleying funny...we posted the exact same thought at the same time...
Not quite $4K, but there was a 2001 S type posted over in the classifieds section from Craigslist in Indiana I think. It had a Ford 5.0 V8 in it. That should provide miles of smiles.
Seriously. Why not look for a nice XJ40. They are seen as very reliable over in Europe, but being a once priced high end Euro car it's automatically crap as far as the whole American based internet is concerned. Also do you car if every last widget and whotsit works? when you say reliability are you talking knick nacks or leaving you stranded?
Head over to Retro Rides Plenty of XJ40's over there bought and run on the cheap.

SWMBO wants a Range Rover, and I have this same formula in mind, except substitute accord for element.
In all seriousness, I've looked into Jags, and it seems like the best bet for a DIYer is a V12 powered Kitty. XJ-S or XJ-12 sedan.

That is a fine plan until you remember that those Accords have the grenade transmission. I was looking at a steal of a deal one not that long ago but the trans was toast and I walked because you can't get a good one from a junkyard and the cheapest rebuilt was $1400 shipped (damn near what I was going to pay for the car).
If you're seriously considering a Jaaag, and can't afford a late-model car, the only model to look at is the XJ. Nothing else this side of a Bentley carries as much class.
I love the sculpted hood and tail on the early (60s/70s) cars, but the modern cars (mid-90's+) are more suited for daily driving. All of them have really rich interiors - detailed leather work and expanses of beautiful wood trim. They drive like boats, but the newer cars are at least pleasantly swift boats.
The mid-90's XJ6 has the stoutest engine in your price range, but those cars are quite old now. If I were you I'd see if I could cut a deal on a 2004+ (aluminum) Jaguar XJ8.

If a 5% failure rate is equal to a "grenade transmission". This problem has been totally blown out of proportion by the internet.

Just like every WRX will eat it's trans
Just like every 2.5L WRX/STI will kill it's ring lands
Just like every M96/97 Porsche will die of terminal IMS bearing failuer

Just like every Jag is going to burn to the ground.

OK, can I pick 'DD' and '$4k' and substitute 'Maserati Bi-turbo' please?

OK, 2001 Toyota Camry.
Or you pick...'99 Accord or '01 Jaguar XJ8. You need to get to work every day or lose your job. Whatcha pickin? Besides, the trans failure on Hondas was an issue, but badly overblown. Wonder how many of those blown trannys ever had a fluid change...
Seriously, what about the Ford 5.0L S type. Here's the thread from a few days ago. http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/200x-classifieds/nmna-01-jag-s-type-50/90983/page1/#post1613496
Text from as. 2001 Jaguar S-Type Hot Rod has been modded with a freshly built V8 Ford 5.0 attached to an AOD tranny with shift kit, stall converter, and B&M Hammer shifter. Custom exhaust, 20" wheels, triple core aluminum radiator. Drives great, sounds amazing!!! Looks even better! Looking for interesting trades. Prefer 4 door car or SUV. Will consider any offers. Car will need some finishing work to be bulletproof, I ran out of time as I've moved. I have a lot invested, but am realistic @$5,000 obo. Thanks!
My neighbor had a non-running xj6 in his garage (non-car people) a few years back. They are absolutely beautiful cars.
you can find 5 speed awd x-types for around 4k, dont know alot about them but i think they are pretty decent.
personally though i would go for a sbc xj
In reply to bravenrace:
That is 5% before 100,000 miles. I am willing to bet that number is closing in on 40% or higher by 175k miles where most of these cars live.
The comment about changing fluid is probably right but most people who buy an Accord treat it like a Honda and barely change the oil, lest anything else.
Anyway, this has nothing to do with this thread. Lets play nice.
In reply to singleslammer:
Any automatic trans that hasn't been maintained has a chance of failing after 100k miles. Just sayin'...
And 40%? That's pure speculation. But I agree that it has little to do with this thread, since putting a new trans in an Accord would be cheaper than many repairs I would expect on an old Jag.
