I guess I was expecting a more dramatic change, but it's all pretty subtle.  I figured the 18s and alloy centerlock wheels would really jump out, but...  they do look more modern, I guess.

Rear overhang looks shorter and the rear fender tops stick out appreciably further from the greenhouse than on the old car......I think.

Number placement is weird, but I'm sure it's to give the sponsors more uninterrupted space on the sides. I like the new wheels a lot, they make the cars look a lot more modern. Plenty of bumping and banging on this little track, and the cars seem to be able to do it without much visible damage.

i thought it turned out pretty good , enough passing to make it interesting , enough bumping to  know it was Nascar ,

And I doubt they will do it again in LA , but there are a lot of other places.....maybe Wrigley Field !

I got hooked on listening to Dale Jr's podcast last year and the number placement was a big issue.  Lots of meetings and discussions about that for a long time from nascars decision makers.  IIRC the final decision is still not made and the clash was going to be used as a test of the new layout.

As an aside I grew up a massive nascar fan.  I started losing interest around the late 90s and pretty much stopped watching just after Dale got killed.  Not that I was a huge Earnhardt fan that just happened to be the era that nascar lost me as a fan.  I never was a Jr fan. But thanks solely to his podcast I'm starting to pay attention again.  And I'm now a massive Dale Jr fan based on nothing he did as a driver but everything he's doing now.  IMO nascar owes him a massive thanks because he's the only reason current nascar holds any interest to me.  If you're in to American racing history do yourself a favor and watch his series called Lost Speedways.  It's excellent.

Watched a few minutes of the race, last 25  laps. It was about as good as what I watched 35 years ago at a local 1/4 mile paved race track near me.  Which sadly is now a parking lot.   Push the guy in front of you, make them go wide and then pass them by going low. Ho Hum.

How long till these chassis hit the used racecar market?

It will likely  be a while. There seems to be an issue with teams getting cars and parts right now.

I don't get why the  number placement is even a discussion topic, let alone a big deal, but it is. I think they look fine. Enlighten me.

I'll admit that the placement looks different, but not that bad.

Didnt watch, forgot that it was on. Curious to see how laptimes decrease when they go to the roadtracks, would be neat to compare last year vs this year at Indy or the Roval etc

Traditional old school nascar fans are resistant to change.  Think about the demographics.  Every single change made from race formats to number placement is met with much hand wringing and turmoil.

It's just different from what we've been seeing for decades is all. And it's asymmetrical, so visually, it makes the car look a bit lopsided. But it's certainly no big deal. Just something to get used to.

God and Richard Petty put them on the doors. They're called door numbers, not fender numbers. I know it sounds silly but it doesn't look right. I'm ok with almost everything elsr, but the number and single lug nut are irritating.

LOL, but Wally, they ceased having doors some time ago. Your first sentence did make me laugh though.

When's the last time a NASCAR had a door?

Probably the late 80s was the last time a factory door skin was used but the position below the window still exists.

When they had Motocross  and stadium Dune buggies  and X games  rallycars (I think) were there thru the years the track went thru the Peristyle  where the torch is

I still think it was a good idea ,   pretty sure it not going to  be every year , but I hope they do it again.

This is not meant as a comment on any particular organization, but a comment on professional sports - perhaps there will be an attempt to have people pay annually for a scoring app?

Those races were a lot of fun to watch.  I don't know if this will be a regular event in LA but sone things I've read give the impression that the race will likely move to other temporary venues in the future, possibly outside the states next year.

Bowman Gray stadium in Winston Salem already has a track in it.

There are already a number of races in the area.  It seems their thought with this is to bring racing to new areas.

I'm a bit disappointed at how fragile the cars seem to be. Speeds were low enough that no one should have ripped a corner off and to have a driveshaft coupling that can fail with fairly little use seems like it might be a poor design choice.

I thought the cars held up pretty well to all the beatin' and bangin' and looked pretty good afterwards. As for the left fronts ripping off, they were hitting a concrete Jersey barrier at speeds of 70+ MPH. I'd like to see the aluminum bumper supports after the race to see how much they took, too. I'm sure there will be some analysis/news coming out about what they learned from the exercise and the 500 will really be a test of the new systems and structures.

I said the same thing. They spent millions of dollars to build that track, brought all that equipment out there and now have to hi-tail it to Daytona (although I bet they all hae multiple transporters to move cars now). The crowd looked very small so I don't know how much exposure they brought to the new area. I think Bowman Gray would have been a great answer with some history. Then again NASCAR seems to have given up on caring about history for about the last 20 years.

Rant over on that.

I think the new cars are nice looking and I like the modular chassis. The race was pretty decent but predictable that a 1/4 mile track would race exactly like that.
