I signed it, not that it's going to do anything. I always thought it was a stupid law to begin with.

Notgunnahappen.

They put it to 25 years because they do not want it to become a viable loophole to bring in unregulated cars. The thing is that many cars may meet the same safety and emissions regs, but they have to write the laws so that it doesn't allow the ones that DON'T. Do you want it to become the next big busniess to bring in 10 year old chinese cars that have the structure of paper machete?

I also signed the Petition that the Whitehouse will acknowledge that those petitions will be ignored.

In reply to Apexcarver: But, wouldn't you like the ability to get certain vehicles that were never sold here legally? ST205 alltrac, Cosmo, 96+ rx7's, real skylines, older M5 wagons, Cossie escorts, etc....

THINK OF THE CHILDRENNNNNNNNN!!!!

You know how many people have died in/because of JDM cars in Alberta? None that I can remember, and you can bet your ass it'd be screamed in the papers if it did.

Also, why would people bring in crappy cars? Shipping completely negates anything being "cheap". Yes, you can get screaming deals if you manage to snag a car from auction for close to free, but it still costs a minimum of ~$3k to ship to Canada anyways. At that point, might as well buy a domestic car, especially because it is a TON of work.

Your thinking on an individual basis.

Theres already companies bringing over 3 wheeled "cars" from china and selling them new. The price drops per unit as you move up economies of scale.

And all you have to have in place is a law that limits the number of cars you can import. Stops the "big business dumping chinese cars on us" in it's tracks, doesn't it? Point is, why punish the individual (who could drive a MUCH more dangerous BABE rally car across country legally already) just to keep a business from flooding the market with "dangerous" cars?

Yes, three wheelers are considered motorcycles. Car manufactures should just start selling cars with one wheel removed and a "full size spare" in the trunk to get around the CAFE laws.

Your average person isn't going to capitalize on the 10 year rule, they probably won't even know about it. This is really a petition for the enthusiast.

I'm not sure if/how this plays into it, but...

If I want to register ANY car built after 1967 in Nevada, I have to pass a smog test.

There are a ton of cars that I can legally import under the 25+ rule, and even more that I could import under a 15+ rule. Many of those would not pass a smog test.

What happens when hundreds or maybe thousands of people legally import cars and find out they can't be registered?

They sell them for real cheap to people in states like mine that doesn't have any silly smog tests!

The seperation of state and federal government strikes again!

Fed DOT and State DOT are seperate entities.

Look at Kit cars, Fed doesn't mess with them at all, so you effectively have 50 different sets of rules.

For importation, there are 3 different sides. Customs, EPA, and NHTSA (which is Fed DOT).

You'll need to log in to post.
