...and they say "You could make a really, really light Seven clone if you used a VW aircooled engine. They weigh nothing, and you'd be eliminating the pesky cooling system too."
Bastards. I hate when they're right. It'd be little more than a front engined Formula Vee, but that's cool.

Why make it front engine then, just stick it in the middle like a sand rail.
...and at that point, I start thinking " Why bother with front engine? Make it mid-engine with a IRS rear & typical Locost front suspension..."![](/media/img/icons/smilies/wink-18.png)
Part of the mumblings were chromed valve covers peeking out from the sides, like a low slung, four wheeled BMW motorcycle.
I bet running the steering shaft from the wheel to the rack would be a bitch with a flat four.. but VERY VERY cool. I would run a Type4 with the 911 style fan conversion
I personally had pondered a suby engine in a locost
Here's what you do. VW engine mated to a transmission of your choice, say one from a Miata. You can pass the steering shaft over the top of the left side cylinders. This will put your intake manifold in the way. So, to fix that anf enhance the classic look of the cylinders poking through the hood, add an SU carb on each side. You can readily make the manifolds from 1.25 pipe weld elbows(I've done it on a autocross prepped formula-Vee). The throttle linkage will probably interfere with the steering linkage, but I can't design and build the whole thing for you. Lsten to the voices.![](/media/img/icons/smilies/grin-18.png)
Oh. At this point your VW engine is probably rotating the wrong way and you have 5 reverse gears and one forward.Flip the differential. Wrecked the front of a work bench discovering that little detail.![](/media/img/icons/smilies/googly-18.png)
only if you are running a Transaxle. with the VW engine bolted to a "normal" transmission, it rotates just fine.
And why dual SUs? At that point you can run dual webbers or Dells.. preferably with nice shiny velocity stacks
I would guess that the Dells and Webers would be about the same width as the hood on a locost and are more expensive. The homemade SU manifolds can be turned outwards, so the carbs are outside the hood. It might look kind of neat when combined with some chromed,or cast Beetle valve covers. When I put them on my Vee I got all kinds of people gawking at SUs on a Beetle engine because it's unexpected. It would be a case of "whatever floats your boat". I still think Knurled should listen to the voices.
you should ALWAYS listen to the voices
Funny, the voices have always told me that going with a Hayabusa or similar engine would be light and fun... probably a lot more complicated, though.

you can still make custom intakes for the dells and webbers.. imagine sidedrafts with a set of 2barrel carbs sticking out either side
