Speaking of the irony of people that think they know everything...
In reply to AnthonyGS (Forum Supporter) :
I'm way to dense to have understood the irony comment you first made. I am referring to you being the first person on this thread to bring up that it's about politics. I did not get that, but then I understood the op's point. If there is context I missed, we'll, not uncommon.
I'm not sure how you can claim you agree with no politics on an automotive forum, and yet make aggressive politically polarizing statements. I have no clue what you are pointing out as irony, but stuff like that usually goes over my head.

I'm sure there are people on here that understand what your ambiguous statement means, but we'll, I'll bet it's off topic.

You aren't dense. You just aren't engaging in his junior high level of semantics.
It's not hard to enunciate your position without being condescending.

When I'm angry it is for me, but I never do it just for fun.
It does tend to bring out the anti-bully in me. As a recipient of being bullied as a wee lad, I grew up since. Somewhat.
z31maniac said:Keith pointed out that we have elevated the amateur and the original thread was about being able to trust the info being posted online. So on a slight tangent, I've noticed something a lot lately on forums and Facebook groups for vehicles.
Why do people who obviously don't know what they're talking about, offer advice as though they do? One of the more egregious ones I saw recently was someone who said:
"The best alignment for your car is 0 toe, 0 camber, and 0 caster."
Some of it is obviously trolling/satire, but there seems to be a lot of people who genuinely believe stuff like I just shared.
Social media to me is just like a big "open mic night". Some people are natural bullE36 M3ters, encouraged by the audience and $$$.
I suspect some presenters fully believe what they say and they have no idea it could be wrong. Some just repeat things they hear because it generates impressions and likes, again with no idea it could be wrong.
I think it's just the reality of so many non curated voices being able to grab the microphone and speak freely.
Once a few people started making real money (and beyond) just by having the balls to try.. the flood gates have opened.
Or they just have parents who told them they're brilliant no matter what.
Generally speaking, I'm allergic to math so lots of the details fly over my head on this, but apparently there were some mathematicians that published a paper a couple years ago about the Dunning-Kreuger research. They claim that they were able to replicate the original paper's results by generating random data and graphing it.
https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/critical-thinking/dunning-kruger-effect-probably-not-real
I think their net was that everybody is overly confident in their expertise but actual experts tend towards having a narrower range.
Anyway, we can go back to bickering if you want. I thought that was somewhat interesting, though.

Don't worry it wasn't aimed at you. I've just found that generally the more noise someone makes about being the smartest person in the room the more likely that is to not be the case.

Thanks for posting that, Ive wondered if that were the actual case.

Very reasonable points. Unfortunately, none of it was what he posted about. He posted about guys, specifically online, theat are clueless, yet say everything with authority...
I get that. I just think of those guys as still developing their knowledge on the subject, and they don't know what they don't know, so if you have the knowledge, teach them. There is plenty of things we are all still learning on, and I'd rather have someone teach me then someone bash me or gatekeep me. As I'm getting older I want more people in automotive not less. So instead of telling someone, you don't know E36 M3, and potentially run them out of the hobby/forums/groups I'd rather teach them or refer them to someone who can and keep them in the hobby.
I have just enough knowledge in a couple of places to know I'm a dumbass, if we teach people they to can be aware of their dumbassery.

I don't think the take away from his post is what you think it is. I also think you're trying to pick problems out of unproblematic thought processes.

Thanks, - didn't automatically assume it was. But have no clue what your statement meant, and although the explanation had some truth in there, no clue how it fits in with the op orig thought.
In reply to Opti :
The guys still developing are not that hard to pick out from the ones the op was talking about. At least I think so. I always try to be nice to folks learning, and try to ignore the other.
if it happens to be a subject I know very well (I'm the learner, in most car info here!!!) I might make a statement to keep others from believing blatantly wrong info., but try to start out politely. Granted, I'm not always capably of staying polite... but I try.
Knowing when and who to ask for help because I'm getting in over my head versus just figuring I know what's what is probably the biggest growth point in my life.
To back up Anthony's point a bit (!!), this thread is pretty ironic (in the common sense, not the actual meaning):
- Someone asks why so many people on the internet think can provide expert advice when they have no clue
- A bunch of people give advice as to why that is...
Now, real irony is an opposite of the intended effect or meaning (e.g. law meant to prevent crime, actually increases it). But, it is super common for people to call any somewhat absurd situation ironic. E.g. the song "ironic" ironically (properly used) has no actual situation of irony in it! (song intends to demonstrate irony, but actually demonstrates what's not irony)

Perhaps that was her point? Purposefully using ironic incorrectly to be ironic?

Two online incidents stand out.
Someone asked, on an autocross specific forum no less, for a basic setup guide for a Stock class Civic (from timeframe, probably '92-95 generation). The first response, after the request went unanswered for half a day, was someone saying to get the lowest race springs you can get, 17" wheels, and a header. Besides not being appropriate for autocross, none of that was Stock legal. There was not quite a E36 M3storm but the responses were as amusing as they were polite
Another was someone on rx7club asking about stage rally suspension. Someone said, well, rally cars need to sit high, so put 2" spacers on top of the strut mounts and rear springs. Not even going to touch that one.
It goes both ways though.... I dimly recall a local thread where someone wanted advice on how to get the starter out of a Chevy truck with the full circle bellhousing. I offered that it was a tight fit but one did not have to unbolt the trans like he was thinking. His response was thanks but he wanted advice from someone who knew what he was talking about. I offered that I did such a starter that morning, but if that is insufficient real world experience then he is free to find information that meets his expectations...

I know pointing out irony is my fault..... that too is ironic. Again on things technical this place can go to infinite detail discussing minutia. The minute you go sociopolitical logic, reason, critical thinking, and the ability to have open honest discussion all fly right out the window for the current thing talking points. I honestly find it ironic, and sorta gross, but that's just me. I'd love to hear how me pointing it out makes me the bad guy more.... So yah, let's not get into it, because you all aren't ready for it and might never be.
Get off the cross, we need the wood.
What you are you building with the wood? Sorry, I'm on a sofa, not a cross.
If it's not a Canadian staple, it's a kickass Letterkenny quote. And that's what I appreciates about you, z31.

My wife is a very very very religious person. I now am now pondering ways to slip this in to conversation.
