#22 does a good job of taking the lead but the excitement of getting that lead then causes him to go too deep in the next turn. In the picture below, the lead car (#22) is still going straight yet the #2 car (#55) is low and already executing the turn. Going too far straight is what causes #22 to end up high and off the track. To me, the mistake is here and has little to do with the contact later. I think #22 would have gone off and over anyway.
In a previous life I spent some time spectating dirt track races. Fights are not that uncommon.

The 22 was riding the cushion, and the other car tried a slide job that wasn't even close.
