whiskey tang foxtrot? Im almost tempted...almost
those were sold with diesels. I saw a diesel escort in the junkyard once...i wanted the engine for a locost.
I guess it was '84 or '85 I saw one of these at a very tiny central Texas Ford/Mercury dealership. That one had an automatic transmission (certainly THE slowest modern Ford passenger car) and it was loaded with EVERY conceivable option. For quite awhile I figured that was THE worst car I had ever seen....then I remembered: Texas, at least in that area, is/was nearly flat as a tabletop. What better place to own a slow, oil-burning sedan?

I thought you were selling that a long time ago, no takers?

I was selling it a long time ago. I found a sucker.
Though I hope he doesn't have any hard feelings over the purchase!
those are stock from the factory. An old HS teacher of mine had one. It was slower than sarah palin in a calculus class. but.. it belched gigantic black smoke clouds, had 300k miles on it, and got 55-60mpg.
Yeah, two other cars most folks don't know came with oil burners:
Mark VII

is it just me or does this cars profile look like the generic crayon car you'd draw on a paper placemat when you were 4?
Strange thing is...I doubled my commute (from 15mi. 1-way) 2yrs ago. Been using my 92 Mk.2 8v VW GTI (29mpg in mixed driving) to commute. Love it, but hit some debris on the I-state and shattered the front bumper cover (only about 16mos after I replaced it the first time) and fog lights. Trim pieces are hard to find, and accessories are worse (seems 1992 was longer ago than I remember..).
Been thinking about a diesel for a DD, but I sure want one a little more modern than that one, or even another Mk.2 Golf/Jetta with the diesel (yeah, they put them in those cars, too). Originally, I was thinking Mk.3 Jetta, but they may be too old as well. And the Mk.4 cars are just crap build quality, from what I've seen. I've heard VW's TDI is a nice piece, but they just no longer build a decent car around it.
Any suggestions? I think I could scrounge up between $3-4K, but I'd sure like to spend half that instead..

That one was a BMW diesel, IIRC

Who do you think was on Ford's design team when they built it?

I so want that. I should have been the "sucker" back when it was for sale. I think I could actually convince the wife that it was a good idea.

And it is the same engine.

Yeah, I know. I'm kinda shopping for one as we speak, or type.
