Twin turbo V12 wrapped in all the comfort you can handle. Claims to be in perfect condition

They had a knack, apparently, for running fine one day and then not starting the next morning because of poor compression.
I was in the dealership when they were new. I did more internal engine work on the diesels than on the red blocks by a long shot.
My theory... They were exactly the same internal parts. 4 cyl VW, 5 cyl Audi, 6 cylinder Volvo. The engines did not last as long as the rest of the Volvo, so they seemed to be junk. The VW was so trashed by the time the engine failed, that it seemed normal.
The 700 turbodiesel (same engine) was even worse. Head gasket after head gasket, they kept putting bigger head bolts on, which just made it harder to retorque the head after the head gasket failure. There was a farmer that made 300,000km on his before the cylinders went so barrel shaped it didn't have enough compression to start.
Garbage.
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
I understand the bores were the main reason that the 240s would lose compression, too.
Which is really curious, because it's a 79.5mm bore block shared with the 81mm and 82.5mm bore gasoline blocks, which are basically indestructible (even my 400k mile 82mm bore five that ran the last couple years of its life dragging a dead cylinder had bores that looked almost new) and I have not heard of TDIs having bore issues.
Maybe the six was just too much length for the undoubtedly too small water pump to handle?

Heh heh heh.
M46, with a unique bell housing and a sleeve on the pilot stub...
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
I know someone who has one, I did not know where it came from because I thought all 240 Diesels in North America were automatics.
Was hanging out at his place, looked over, exclaimed "Hey, that's an AUDI bellhousing pattern!"
I have two or three five cylinder turbo engines kicking around over here still.
In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
I've thrown quite a few of those away...
I'd say most of the 240s here were manual trans. Most of the 700s automatic. Maybe all... They used the ZF box, not the Aisan. I really don't remember a stick 700.
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
I spent some time driving a borrowed 740 Turbo wagon, with the 4+OD trans. Oddly enough, shortly after I had an MGB apart to rebuild its overdrive. (The first step is removing the engine. "Chunderheaded" is the correct term)
I rather like the setup, to be frank. The external overdrive that is, not the floorpan layout of the MGB. And whose bright idea were those bullet connectors?
In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
My boss, back in the dealership days (Bo Skowronnek, if you want to Google) won the Canadian National rally championship in an open class 242 turbo with 18 pounds of boost and av gas. He had the overdrive hooked up to operate in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. Twisty bits, 2nd over was his gear of choice.
This is why I snicker at people who have to upgrade the gearbox for their hotrod Volvo.

definitely some yes there, for sure. but only about 25% for me. and sometimes that's enough. but not this time.

Neat but I hope the builder told them what glass he designed it for :)

I need that with a stainless interior, a turbo LS and on bags for my hot sauce endeavour.
If there weren't currently Seven Boxsters in the driveway (and one in the garage)...
I should probably hold out for a red one even though it's hard to find these up for sale at all and this looks like a good one.
This is cool and the seller seems legit. On FB Market for 6 weeks though? Probably gone already.
Me? Two disassembled BMW airheads in the garage, a Boxster waiting to be pushed back in to finish an engine swap, six(?) project cars in line after that. ...I just want to message him to see if it's available still.
