So the tire pics were taken in the pits right after coming off track. There was no more heat input to the tire, so the tire is cooling off. Heat will flow from hot to cold. The outside will be the coolest part.

When out on course, assuming the heat is from friction with the road and ignoring carcass deformation, the hottest part would be blocks and the valleys would be cooler assuming that heat is going into the tire.

That is my simpleton guess at why the valleys are cool.

I thought the valleys were hot on the pictures. the valleys should be hotter, the carcass will be the hottest part of the tire, especially at rest when the tire is being cooled and heat isn't being put into the tire. thats why you stick the pyrometer into the carcass and dont' just measure the surface temp of the tread.

And thats why the blocks are cooler than the valleys.
