Why the he'll should I be worried about resale on a suburban that I have less than 5k in? Even a "nice" one would have been under 10k.

Get the Avalanche you won't be disappointed. It is a suburban with a bed, and will ride way way better than any "real" truck.
Seems to be a lot of love out there for the Suburban, along with its Avalanche and Tahoe siblings. What about the Ford Expedition? Or even the Excursion?
Excursion would be all right. the Expedition frame is so narrow (compared to the GM twins) it feels tipsy unladen, I'd hate to feel it towing.
In reply to Danny Shields:
I orginally started looking at Suburbans, but I still need a truck to do truck things (haul scrap, lawn refuse, engine from Pull-a-Part, etc). The Avalanche ticks the boxes for being a truck and being camper (add tent) for trackside arrangements for Mrs. Zero.
If I could keep the Dakota, I would be shopping Suburban.

Both are quite good. The Excursion is an F250 w/ an SUV body over it. The 2nd gen Expeditions are better than the prior for towing. Ford made a lot of improvements to it for towing since the Excursion was going away.
I too had the tent for the Avalanche. That was the only way my wife would go camping, and it was great for me when I went to races or hillclimbs. Everybody always wanted to stop and take a peek to see how it all worked.
I had a 2004 Expedition for maybe a year a couple years ago. The IRS rode really well and its brakes were WAY better than those on my burban. It was the Eddie Bauer edition one so it had the self leveling air suspension which started giving troubles when I traded it.
I towed a car with it once (on a dolly) and couldn't even tell there was anything back there. It certainly wasn't "tippy".
I know these aren't close to you, but just so you can see they are out there.

Need a little work, but for the general population of this forum, shouldn't be too hard.
This one is a little more, but also seems to be in better condition.
