I hate to see awesome cars become garage queens in their old age. In my random eBay browsing I came across this gem.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Renault-R5-Turbo-2-II-RARE-1984-84-Original-and-Clean-/360258569501?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item53e115851d
This part made me especially sad:
"The electric turbo pop-off valve is not working and has been by-passed. A new blow-off valve can be installed should you choose to do so. It is driven very casually and mechanic stated it would be an okay fix considering the manor of driving that it sees."
Oh, the things I would do in this car.
If I could find an R5 lying around somewhere, I'd be REAL tempted to make a Challenge-legal recreation of this car.
Oh the things I would do to own one of those. I would love to have one someday. My lust for those is only surpassed by Citroens.
the only thing I want more is a Lancia Delta Integrale HF Evoluzione...
One of those or a Stratos makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

+1
I love the individual throttle bodies on the ebay of that R5 though, secks on wheels...

An R5 and a Stratos plus a Cosy Escort and life would be just about perfect.

Agreed. That blew my mind. I've never seen integration with the intercooler like that.
Those are not ITB, the endcap of the intercooler also serves as a plenum, that feeds each cylinder through the hoses to stub manifolds that contain the injectors. It uses K-Jetronic fuel injection, the actual throttle body is somewhere upstream. It was by the way, a pushrod motor, of 1397 cc, 160 HP stock, some race versions up to 345 HP.
Whoa, so the throttle body's upstream of the intercooler? Weird.
it worked well.. it is a shame that Renault did not support that car in the US. the few that made it across the ocean were verbotin and Renault told their dealers NOT to do any work on them what-so-ever.

The only thing that's kind of sad about that is that I'll never get a chance to own it.

I seem to remember Jensen Beach Fla was the "official" importer for the R5 turbo
Was a very exciting little car... if I remember correctly it had a higher g capability then the Lambo
